About this calculator
A stitch pattern with a repeat -- a cable, a lace motif, a colorwork chart -- only looks right when the total stitch count divides evenly into whole repeats, and an arbitrary cast-on width almost never does. This calculator subtracts your Edge Stitches from Desired Width (stitches) to find the stitches actually available for the pattern, divides that by Pattern Repeat, and rounds to the nearest whole number of repeats -- so Adjusted Stitch Count is always Desired Width (stitches) nudged up or down to the closest multiple that keeps every repeat complete. Desired Width (stitches) is what drives the result: raising it raises Adjusted Stitch Count in lockstep, since the rounding only ever nudges the target by a fraction of one repeat.
Pattern Repeat works the opposite way on Pattern Repeats itself -- a bigger repeat means fewer full repeats fit into the same available width, so Pattern Repeats falls as Pattern Repeat rises. Because rounding to the nearest repeat can land above or below your original target, Difference from Desired shows exactly how many stitches the adjustment added or subtracted, and Option: Fewer Repeats and Option: More Repeats show the two neighboring stitch counts one repeat smaller and one repeat larger, so you can pick whichever is closer to your original plan or to a nearby garment-fit requirement. Input Check catches an invalid combination before it can masquerade as a normal answer: if Edge Stitches is set equal to or larger than Desired Width (stitches), there's no room left for even one pattern repeat, so Adjusted Stitch Count falls back to Edge Stitches alone with zero repeats and Input Check flags the combination explicitly instead of quietly rounding up to a misleading "1 repeat."

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Adjusted Stitch Count relate to Desired Width (stitches)?
Adjusted Stitch Count tracks Desired Width (stitches) almost one-to-one: raising your target width raises the adjusted count by roughly the same amount, since the calculator only rounds the target to the nearest whole multiple of Pattern Repeat rather than recalculating it from scratch. The adjustment is always a small nudge -- at most about half a repeat in either direction -- never a large jump.
Why does increasing Pattern Repeat reduce the number of repeats I get?
Pattern Repeats counts how many complete copies of the pattern fit into your available stitches (Desired Width minus Edge Stitches), so a larger Pattern Repeat value divides that same available width into fewer whole chunks. A wide 20-stitch cable repeat fits far fewer times across a given piece than a narrow 4-stitch rib repeat does.
Why might Adjusted Stitch Count not exactly equal my Desired Width (stitches)?
Because Desired Width (stitches) rarely divides evenly by Pattern Repeat once Edge Stitches are set aside, the calculator rounds to the nearest whole repeat instead of forcing an incomplete one. Difference from Desired reports the size of that rounding gap so you know whether your piece will come out a few stitches wider or narrower than originally planned.
What's the difference between Option: Fewer Repeats and Option: More Repeats?
Option: Fewer Repeats and Option: More Repeats show the stitch counts you'd get with one repeat less or one repeat more than the best-fit Adjusted Stitch Count, each still including your Edge Stitches. They give you two alternative cast-on widths to compare against a target garment measurement when the best-fit option isn't close enough to your original plan.
What happens if I set Edge Stitches equal to or larger than Desired Width?
Input Check flags it as invalid rather than showing a misleadingly normal result: with no stitches left over for the pattern, Pattern Repeats drops to 0 and Adjusted Stitch Count falls back to just Edge Stitches. Reduce Edge Stitches or increase Desired Width (stitches) until Input Check reads OK before trusting the other outputs.
