Streaming Setup Cost Calculator

Calculate complete streaming equipment cost with recurring expenses and break-even analysis.

About this calculator

Starting a stream involves both a one-time hardware outlay and ongoing monthly costs, and this calculator keeps the two separate so you can see which one actually dominates your budget. Hardware total simply sums webcam, microphone, capture card, lighting, green screen, and stream deck/extras costs — a one-time purchase — while monthly recurring cost adds software subscriptions (overlays, alerts, bots; note OBS itself is free) to any internet plan upgrade needed for stream-quality upload bandwidth. Annual recurring cost is just that monthly figure times 12, and first-year total combines the one-time hardware spend with a full year of recurring costs, giving a realistic all-in figure for year one rather than just the sticker price of the gear. Break-even analysis assumes an average net value of $2.50 per subscriber after platform revenue cuts, and divides the first-year total by that figure to estimate how many subscribers it would take to fully offset the year's spending — a genuinely useful reality check, since that number is often far higher than a new streamer's realistic viewership.

A separate, smaller figure shows subscribers needed to cover just the ongoing monthly costs, which is the more achievable near-term target. The quality tier rating (1 through 5) is based purely on hardware spend thresholds — $200, $400, $800, and $1,500 — so it reflects how much you spent, not measured output quality; a well-chosen budget mic and webcam can outperform a higher tier built from mismatched components. Because the $2.50-per-sub figure and cost inputs are averages, actual break-even points vary significantly by platform, audience size, and subscription tier mix.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter individual hardware costs: Webcam, Microphone, Capture Card, Lighting, and Green Screen.
  2. Enter Stream Deck/extras cost, Software Monthly Cost, and Internet Upgrade monthly cost.
  3. Review First Year Total including all hardware and recurring software/internet costs.
  4. Compare the streaming setup cost against potential income from subscriptions and donations.
  5. Identify which components to prioritize first for a phased budget rollout.

How the result changes with Internet Upgrade

What each input means

Webcam
Webcam or DSLR camera cost. Budget: $50, Mid: $100-200, Pro: $300+.
Microphone
USB mic or XLR setup. Audio quality is the #1 viewer retention factor.
Capture Card
Only needed for console streaming. Not required for PC-only.
Lighting
Ring light or key light setup.
Green Screen
Collapsible green screen for background removal.
Stream Deck / Extras
Stream deck, mic arm, pop filter, cables.
Software (Monthly)
Overlays, alerts, bots, music licensing (OBS is free).
Internet Upgrade
Additional monthly internet cost for upload bandwidth.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Webcam = 100, Microphone = 100, Capture Card = 0, Lighting = 60 = 8 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate First Year Total
    First Year Total
    730 = $730
  3. Calculate Hardware Cost
    Hardware Cost
    370 = $370
  4. Calculate Monthly Recurring

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Subs to Break Even and the monthly subscriber figure?

Subs to Break Even divides your full First Year Total (one-time hardware plus a year of recurring costs) by the assumed $2.50 net value per subscriber, telling you how many total subs it would take to fully offset everything spent in year one. The monthly figure instead divides just monthlyRecurring (software plus internet) by that same $2.50, giving the smaller, more achievable target of covering only your ongoing costs each month rather than the full annual investment.

Why is Capture Card Cost defaulted to $0?

A capture card is only needed for console streaming, where video has to be routed from the console into a PC for encoding — PC-only streamers don't need one since the streaming software captures the screen directly. The default of $0 assumes a PC-only setup; console streamers should enter their capture card's actual price to get an accurate Hardware Cost figure.

Does a higher Quality Tier mean better stream production value?

Not necessarily. Quality Tier is based purely on total hardware spend crossing fixed thresholds ($200, $400, $800, $1,500) — it's a spending-tier label, not a measured output-quality score. A streamer with a well-chosen budget mic and webcam can produce a better-looking, better-sounding stream than someone who spent more on mismatched or unnecessary components, so treat this tier as a budget signal rather than a quality guarantee.

What's included in Hardware Cost versus Monthly Recurring?

Hardware Cost sums the one-time purchase costs you enter for webcam, microphone, capture card, lighting, green screen, and stream deck/extras — items you buy once. Monthly Recurring instead sums software subscriptions (overlays, alerts, bots — OBS itself is free) plus any internet plan upgrade for upload bandwidth, both of which repeat every month and get multiplied by 12 for Annual Recurring.
