How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the number of fire props and wicks per prop.
  2. Input fuel per wick (ml) and burn time per soak (min) for your wick size and fuel type.
  3. Set the total number of shows or soaks needed for your event.
  4. Review Total Fuel (ml and liters), Burn Time per Show, and safe fuel quantity to carry.
  5. Always use an appropriate fire-safe container and follow local fire performance safety guidelines.

What each input means

Number of props
Fire poi, staff, fans, etc. — how many props used simultaneously.
Wicks per prop
Number of wick heads on each prop (poi = 1, dragon staff = 4-6).
Fuel per wick (ml)
Millilitres of fuel absorbed per wick per soak (depends on wick size and material).
Burn time per soak (min)
Minutes each wick burns before needing a re-soak (white gas ~3-5 min, lamp oil ~5-7 min).
Performance length (min)
Total length of the fire portion of the act.
Number of shows
How many performances to plan fuel for.

What each result means

Soaks per show
How many times you need to re-soak wicks during a performance.
Total wick count
Total number of wicks across all props.
Fuel per soak (ml)
Fuel needed for one complete soak of all props.
Fuel per show (ml)
Total fuel for one performance including 20% waste allowance.
Total fuel (ml)
Total fuel for all performances.
Total fuel (litres)
Total fuel in litres.
Total fuel (fl oz)
Total fuel in fluid ounces.
Total fuel (gallons)
Total fuel in US gallons.
Estimated fuel cost ($)
Approximate cost based on average fuel prices (~$6.50/litre).
Total burn time (min)
Cumulative minutes of active fire across all shows.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Number of props = 2, Wicks per prop = 2, Fuel per wick (ml) = 20, Burn time per soak (min) = 4 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Fuel per show
    Fuel per show = fuelPerPerformanceMl + wasteFactorMl
    288 = 288
  3. Calculate Total fuel
    Total fuel = totalPerPerformanceMl * numPerformances
    288 = 288
  4. Calculate Soaks per show
    Soaks per show
    3 = 3
  5. Calculate Total wick count
    Total wick count
    4 = 4
