Framing Cost Calculator

Custom frame cost from dimensions and material.

About this calculator

Custom framing cost is really five separate line items added together, and this calculator prices each one from your artwork size and choices rather than quoting a single flat rate. First it builds the "frame opening" — your artwork dimensions plus the mat border added to all four sides — and uses its perimeter to size the moulding: cost per linear foot times a 1.2 multiplier, since frame shops typically add about 20% extra for waste and mitred-corner joining. Mat board is priced off the cut-out area (the frame opening's area minus the artwork's area) at roughly 3 cents per square inch, with an $8 floor for small mats, or skipped entirely if you set mat width to zero. Glazing is priced per square foot of the frame opening at rates that scale with protection level — about $4 for regular glass, $10 for UV-filtering glass, $25 for museum-grade anti-reflective glass, and $8 for acrylic/plexiglass — plus a small backing-board charge at 50 cents a square foot.

Labor is modeled as a $35 flat assembly fee plus $2 per linear foot of perimeter, and mounting/hinging cost is whatever archival mounting method you specify, added in directly. All six pieces sum to the total. Real-world framing quotes vary by shop and region, and this doesn't account for regional labor-rate differences, rush fees, or non-standard shapes (ovals, multi-opening mats), so treat it as a solid ballpark for budgeting rather than a binding estimate.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Artwork Width, Artwork Height, and Mat Border Width.
  2. Set Moulding Cost per Foot, Glazing (0=Glass, 1=UV, 2=Museum, 3=Acrylic), and Mounting/Hinging Cost.
  3. Review the Total Framing Cost ($) result.
  4. Use Moulding Cost ($) and Mat Board Cost ($) to inform your decision.

What each input means

Artwork Width
Width of the artwork to be framed.
Artwork Height
Height of the artwork to be framed.
Mat Border Width
Width of the mat border (0 for no mat). Standard is 2-4 inches.
Moulding Cost per Foot
Frame moulding price per linear foot. Basic: $3-6, mid-range: $8-15, premium: $20+.
Glazing (0=Glass, 1=UV, 2=Museum, 3=Acrylic)
0 = regular glass, 1 = UV glass, 2 = museum glass, 3 = acrylic.
Mounting/Hinging Cost
Cost for archival mounting, hinging tape, or dry mounting.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Artwork Width = 16, Artwork Height = 20, Mat Border Width = 3, Moulding Cost per Foot = 8 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total Framing Cost
    Total Framing Cost = mouldingCost + matBoardCost + glazingCost + backingCost + mountingCost + labo...
    168.68 = $168.68
  3. Calculate Moulding Cost
    Moulding Cost = perimeterFt * mouldingPerFt * 1.2
    76.8 = $76.8
  4. Calculate Mat Board Cost
    8 = $8

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does setting Mat Border Width to 0 not save as much as I expected?

Setting mat width to zero does eliminate the Mat Board Cost entirely, but the frame opening then equals your artwork size exactly, which shrinks the perimeter feeding the moulding, glazing, and labor formulas too. So you save the mat board line item plus a smaller amount on everything perimeter- and area-based, not a flat fixed sum.

Why is Moulding Cost multiplied by 1.2 instead of just cost-per-foot times perimeter?

The 1.2 multiplier represents the roughly 20% of moulding that gets consumed as waste and cut-off during the mitred 45-degree corner joins — real moulding purchases are made in linear-foot lengths, and frame shops typically buy that extra 20% margin to guarantee clean corners on every piece, so the calculator bakes that into the raw cost-per-foot figure.

How does the Glazing option (0-3) change the total, and by how much?

Glazing cost is the frame opening's area in square feet multiplied by a fixed rate per type: about $4/sq ft for regular glass, $10 for UV-filtering glass, $25 for museum-grade anti-reflective glass, and $8 for acrylic. On a typical 16x20 piece with a 3-inch mat (about 3 sq ft of glazing), that's roughly a $60 swing between regular glass and museum glass alone.

Does Number of Works or artwork shape change these numbers?

This calculator prices a single rectangular piece — there's no multi-work or oval/multi-opening mat option, and the explainer notes that non-standard shapes aren't modeled. For an oval, a multi-window mat, or a batch of several pieces, treat this as a per-piece rectangular estimate and adjust manually.
