How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the sculpture's bounding box dimensions in inches (height, width, depth).
  2. Select complexity: 0 = simple (few undercuts), 1 = moderate, 2 = complex (many undercuts, fine detail).
  3. Select mold rubber type: tin-cure silicone (~$18/lb), platinum-cure silicone (~$28/lb), or urethane rubber (~$14/lb).
  4. Review total material cost, silicone needed in lbs and gallons, and the cost breakdown chart.
  5. Mother mold (rigid outer shell) cost is calculated separately from the rubber cost and added to the total -- budget extra for plaster or fiberglass shells on large molds.

How the result changes with Sculpture height (in)

Sculpture height (in)Total material cost
25$671.15
85$2,465.72
156$4,446.21
216$6,123.56

What each input means

Sculpture height (in)
Overall height of the sculpture to be molded.
Sculpture width (in)
Maximum width of the sculpture.
Sculpture depth (in)
Maximum depth (front to back) of the sculpture.
Complexity
0 = simple (few undercuts), 1 = moderate, 2 = complex (many undercuts, fine detail).
Mold rubber type
0 = tin-cure silicone (~$18/lb), 1 = platinum-cure silicone (~$28/lb), 2 = urethane rubber (~$14/lb).

What each result means

Total material cost
Combined cost of silicone, mother mold, and supplies.
Silicone needed (lbs)
Weight of silicone rubber required.
Silicone (gallons)
Volume of silicone rubber in gallons.
Silicone cost
Cost of the silicone rubber alone.
Mother mold cost
Cost of rigid outer shell (plaster or fiberglass).
Number of mold pieces
Recommended number of mold sections.
Wall thickness (in)
Recommended silicone wall thickness.
Surface area (in²)
Estimated effective surface area including detail factor.
Est. labor hours
Estimated time to complete the mold.
Silicone volume (in³)
Total silicone volume in cubic inches.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Sculpture height (in) = 24, Sculpture width (in) = 12, Sculpture depth (in) = 10, Complexity = 1 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total material cost
    Total material cost = siliconeCost + motherMoldCost + miscSuppliesCost
    649.49 = $649.49
  3. Calculate Silicone needed
    Silicone needed = siliconeGallons * 10.8
    19.7 = 19.7
  4. Calculate Silicone
    Silicone = siliconeVolumeIn3 / 231
    1.82 = 1.82
