Translation Cost Calculator
Calculate per-word translation cost for multiple languages.
About this calculator
Translating a book into multiple languages multiplies both cost and time by however many target languages are chosen, since each language is effectively a separate full translation project. This calculator multiplies word count by a per-word rate to get a base cost, applies a roughly 30% premium if a proofreading review pass is included alongside the translation, and then multiplies that per-language cost by the number of target languages for the Total Cost figure.
Turnaround time is estimated separately, at a professional pace of about 2,500 words per day converted into a five-day work week — that Days per Language and Weeks per Language figure describes how long a single language takes, not the combined timeline if languages are translated one after another rather than in parallel by different translators. The Market Reach Multiplier is a simplified heuristic assuming each additional target language opens roughly 10% more potential revenue, which doesn't account for the reality that translating into a small regional language typically opens far less market than translating into a major world language — treat that figure as a rough planning signal rather than a precise revenue forecast.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Word Count, Rate per Word, and Number of Languages.
- Set Include Review (0=No, 1=Yes).
- Review the Total Cost (All Languages) ($) result.
- Use Cost per Language ($) and Days per Language (days) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Word Count
| Word Count | Total Cost (All Languages) |
|---|---|
| 40,000 | $18,720.00 |
| 60,000 | $28,080.00 |
| 120,000 | $56,160.00 |
| 200,000 | $93,600.00 |
What each input means
- Word Count
- Total word count to be translated.
- Rate per Word
- Translator rate per word (common: $0.08-$0.20).
- Number of Languages
- Number of target languages.
- Include Review (0=No, 1=Yes)
- 0 = translation only, 1 = translation + proofreading review (adds ~30%).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does including a review pass add roughly 30% to the cost?
A dedicated proofreading or editorial review after translation is itself a separate skilled pass requiring a second qualified reader, and the industry-typical premium for adding it runs around 30% on top of the base translation rate. Skipping the review lowers cost but leaves the translated text without an independent quality check before publication.
Does adding more target languages always add proportional revenue?
Not really — the Market Reach Multiplier applies a flat 10% bump per additional language as a simplification, but real market size varies enormously by language. Translating into a language spoken by hundreds of millions of readers typically opens far more revenue potential than a smaller regional language, even though both add the same 10% in this model.
How is the turnaround time per language estimated?
It assumes a professional translator working at roughly 2,500 words per day, converts that into whole days needed for the total word count, and then expresses that in five-day work weeks. Faster turnaround is possible by splitting the project across multiple translators working the same language simultaneously, which this simple per-translator estimate doesn't model.
Does the project finish in Days per Language total, or does that multiply by the number of languages?
Days per Language describes how long a single language's translation takes on its own — it isn't automatically multiplied by the number of languages you're translating into. If one translator handles every language sequentially, the real project timeline is closer to that figure multiplied by the language count; translating languages in parallel with separate translators keeps the timeline closer to the single-language estimate.
