Faculty Workload Calculator

This calculator adds up a faculty member's weekly time commitments across teaching, research, service, and advising into a single Total Weekly Hours figure, then rates the result against common workload benchmarks. Teaching Credits / Semester is the single largest driver of Total Weekly Hours, since it feeds two terms at once -- Contact Hours (a direct 1:1 mapping, since a credit hour is conventionally one weekly contact hour) and Prep Hours (Teaching Credits multiplied by Prep Hours per Credit). Research Hours / Week has no effect on Contact Hours at all; contact hours are set purely by Teaching Credits / Semester, since research time doesn't involve scheduled class meetings.

Advising Hours / Week is derived by spreading each advisee's per-semester advising time evenly across the semester's weeks -- more advisees or more hours per advisee raises the weekly average, but a longer semester (more Weeks per Semester) spreads the same total advising load thinner per week. Workload Intensity applies fixed thresholds: Standard at or under 40 hours, Heavy up to 50, Very Heavy up to 60, and Unsustainable beyond that -- useful as a talking point in workload discussions, but these thresholds are general benchmarks, not a specific institution's contractual definition of full load. What this doesn't account for: administrative duties outside formal service hours, grant-funded course releases that reduce teaching load, or the reality that research productivity doesn't scale linearly with hours logged the way teaching contact hours do.
