How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Student Age, then rate each skill (Running, Jumping, Hopping, Skipping / Galloping, Overhand Throw, Catching, Kicking, Striking, Static Balance, Dynamic Balance) as Emerging, Developing, Competent, or Proficient.
  2. Set Confidence / Motivation to reflect the student's willingness to try new activities and self-efficacy.
  3. Adjust individual skill ratings as needed to match observed performance.
  4. Review the Physical Literacy Score (1-4) result.
  5. Use Locomotor Skills (1-4) and Object Control (1-4) to inform your decision.

What each input means

Student Age
Age in years for age-appropriate expectations.
Running
Running movement competency.
Jumping
Horizontal and vertical jumping competency.
Hopping
Single-foot hopping with control.
Skipping / Galloping
Rhythmic locomotor patterns.
Overhand Throw
Overhand throwing form and accuracy.
Catching
Catching with hands (not trapping against body).
Kicking
Kicking a stationary and moving ball.
Striking
Striking with implements (bat, racket, paddle).
Static Balance
Balancing on one foot, balance beam, etc.
Dynamic Balance
Maintaining balance during movement.
Confidence / Motivation
Willingness to try new activities and self-efficacy.

What each result means

Physical Literacy Score (1-4)
Weighted composite across all domains.
Locomotor Skills (1-4)
Average score for running, jumping, hopping, skipping.
Object Control (1-4)
Average score for throwing, catching, kicking, striking.
Stability/Balance (1-4)
Average score for static and dynamic balance.
Confidence Score (1-4)
Self-reported or observed motivation level.
Age-Expected Level
Expected competency level for this age group.
Development Gap
Positive = above expected, negative = below expected.
Skills at Competent+ (%)
Percentage of skills rated 3 or 4.
Proficient Skills (count)
Number of skills rated at level 4.
Emerging Skills (count)
Number of skills still at level 1 — priority areas.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Student Age = 8, Running = 3, Jumping = 3, Hopping = 2 = 12 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Physical Literacy Score
    Physical Literacy Score = movementCompetence * 0.6 + stabilityAvg * 0.2 + confidence * 0.2
    2.35 = 2.35
  3. Calculate Locomotor Skills
    Locomotor Skills = (running + jumping + hopping + skipping) / 4
    2.5 = 2.5
  4. Calculate Object Control
    Object Control = (throwing + catching + kicking + striking) / 4
    2 = 2
