How to Use This Calculator
  1. Count the Total Words in the text sample (use a word processor or manually count a representative passage).
  2. Count Total Sentences (every sentence ending with a period, question mark, or exclamation point).
  3. Count Total Syllables — each vowel sound counts as one syllable; tools like ReadabilityFormulas.com can automate this.
  4. The calculator computes Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (e.g., 6.0 = appropriate for sixth grade).
  5. Flesch Reading Ease (0–100) indicates difficulty: 60–70 is considered plain English; lower scores are harder to read.
  6. Use the approximate Lexile score to match the text to students' reading bands on Lexile charts.
