How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the total word count of the project for translation.
  2. Input the translation memory (TM) match breakdown: 100%, fuzzy 85-99%, fuzzy 75-84%, and no match.
  3. Set the full-translation rate per word and discount rates for each fuzzy match tier.
  4. Review the blended cost and time savings from leveraging existing TM matches.
  5. Update your TM after each project to increase future match rates and reduce costs.

What each input means

Source Segment Length (words)
Number of words in the source segment being translated.
Matched Words
Number of words that exactly match the TM entry.
Substitutions
Words replaced with different words (e.g., name or number changes).
Insertions
New words added that were not in the TM entry.
Deletions
Words from the TM entry removed in the source.

What each result means

Match Category
100 = exact match, 95 = high fuzzy, 75 = fuzzy, 0 = no match.
Leverage Rate
Estimated reuse percentage for cost savings.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Source Segment Length (words) = 20, Matched Words = 18, Substitutions = 1, Insertions = 1 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Match Percentage
    Match Percentage = min(100
    80 = 80
  3. Calculate Edit Distance
    Edit Distance
    2 = 2
  4. Calculate Match Category
    75 = 75
