Recycling Impact Calculator

Calculate the environmental impact of recycling. See how much CO2, energy, and water you save by recycling.

About this calculator

This calculator projects annual environmental savings by multiplying Items Recycled Per Week (scaled to 52 weeks per year) by three separate flat per-item savings rates — CO₂ Saved Per Item, Energy Saved Per Item, and Water Saved Per Item — each of which only feeds its own matching total, and has zero effect on the other two. Raising Energy Saved Per Item, for example, changes Energy Saved Per Year but leaves CO₂ Saved Per Year and Water Saved Per Year completely unchanged, since the three savings streams are computed independently rather than derived from one another. The default per-item figures (0.5 kg CO₂, 2.5 kWh energy, 10 L water) are single flat averages applied uniformly to every item, whether it's a soda can, a magazine, or a glass jar — real recycling savings vary enormously by material (aluminum recycling saves dramatically more energy per item than recycling paper, for instance), so the defaults are illustrative averages rather than material-specific figures.

If you know the composition of what you recycle, adjusting the three advanced inputs to a blended rate for your actual mix will produce a more accurate projection than the defaults. The 10-year chart simply multiplies the annual figures by each year number — it assumes a constant recycling rate over the full decade and does not model any change in habits, item mix, or per-item savings rates over time.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Items Recycled Per Week for your household or facility.
  2. Optionally adjust the advanced per-item CO₂, energy, and water savings figures if you have more accurate local data.
  3. Review CO₂ Saved Per Year, the calculator's headline result.
  4. Check Energy Saved Per Year and Water Saved Per Year for the fuller environmental picture.
  5. Use the 10-year chart to see how consistent recycling habits compound over time.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Items Recycled Per Week = 20, CO₂ Saved Per Item = 0.5, Energy Saved Per Item = 2.5, Water Saved Per Item = 10 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate CO₂ Saved Per Year
    CO₂ Saved Per Year
    520 = 520
  3. Calculate Energy Saved Per Year
    Energy Saved Per Year
    2600 = 2600
  4. Calculate Water Saved Per Year

Frequently Asked Questions

Does raising Energy Saved Per Item change my CO₂ Saved Per Year?

No. CO₂ Saved Per Year, Energy Saved Per Year, and Water Saved Per Year are each computed independently from Items Recycled Per Week and their own matching per-item rate. Energy Saved Per Item only affects Energy Saved Per Year — it has no mathematical connection to the CO₂ or water totals in this calculator.

Are the default per-item savings figures specific to any one material?

No, they are flat averages (0.5 kg CO₂, 2.5 kWh energy, 10 L water per item) applied uniformly regardless of whether the item is aluminum, paper, glass, or plastic. Real recycling savings vary substantially by material — aluminum recycling, for example, saves far more energy per item than recycling paper — so treat the defaults as illustrative averages, not a material-specific calculation.

How does the 10-year chart project savings into the future?

It simply multiplies your calculated annual CO₂, energy, and water savings by each year number from 1 through 10, assuming you recycle exactly the same number of items per week every year. It does not model any change in your recycling habits, the mix of materials you recycle, or improvements in recycling efficiency over that decade.

How much does doubling Items Recycled Per Week change my results?

All three annual totals — CO₂, energy, and water saved — scale directly and proportionally with Items Recycled Per Week, since each is simply items recycled per year multiplied by a fixed per-item rate. Doubling Items Recycled Per Week roughly doubles all three totals simultaneously, holding the per-item rates unchanged.
