Compost Calculator
Calculate how much compost you can produce and its environmental impact. Track your composting efforts.
About this calculator
Composting volume scales directly with two things: how many people are generating kitchen and yard waste, and how much each of them contributes per week. This calculator multiplies household size by your entered compostable-waste rate per person to get a weekly total, then projects that forward to monthly and yearly totals and estimates the CO2 impact of diverting that material from landfill disposal. Both inputs move every downstream figure in the same direction and by the same proportional amount -- a household that doubles in size produces twice the compost at the same per-person rate, and a household that doubles its per-person composting rate (by capturing more food scraps and yard trimmings that would otherwise go to the trash) produces twice the compost at the same household size.
The estimated annual CO2 savings figure applies a fixed emissions factor per kilogram of compost, reflecting the broad, commonly cited idea that diverting organic waste from a landfill (where it decomposes anaerobically and produces methane) to a compost pile (where it decomposes aerobically) avoids a meaningful share of the methane that landfilling the same material would otherwise generate. What this calculator doesn't account for: the actual composition of your waste stream (paper, yard trimmings, and food scraps decompose and offset emissions differently), local landfill gas capture rates (which vary widely and change how much methane composting actually avoids versus a given landfill), and the real logistics of composting -- bin capacity, turning frequency, and finished-compost curing time all affect how much of your generated organic waste actually becomes usable compost versus simply decomposing in a pile.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your Household Size (number of people generating compostable waste).
- Set Compost Per Person to the average compostable waste each person contributes per week, in kilograms.
- Review Weekly Compost, Monthly Compost, and Yearly Compost to see your projected totals.
- Check CO₂ Saved Per Year to estimate the emissions impact of diverting that material from landfill disposal.
- Compost reaches maturity in 2–6 months — turn the pile regularly to speed decomposition.
How the result changes with Household Size
| Household Size | Weekly Compost |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3 kg |
| 3 | 4.5 kg |
| 6 | 9 kg |
| 10 | 15 kg |
What each input means
- Household Size
- Number of people in your household.
- Compost Per Person
- Average compostable waste per person per week (kg). 1.5 kg/week (~78 kg/year) is a reasonable starting estimate; households that capture most of their food scraps often run higher.

Frequently Asked Questions
My household grew from 3 people to 6 -- how much more compost should I expect?
Twice as much, at the same per-person rate. Weekly, monthly, and yearly compost totals are all calculated as household size multiplied by the compost-per-person rate you enter, with no other adjustment applied, so the relationship is purely proportional -- doubling household size while holding the per-person rate constant doubles every compost total, and the same is true in reverse for the per-person rate.
How is the estimated CO2 savings figure calculated?
Estimated annual CO2 savings is calculated by applying a fixed emissions factor to your yearly compost total, reflecting the broad idea that composting avoids some of the methane that the same organic material would generate decomposing anaerobically in a landfill. It scales directly with however much compost you produce, so anything that raises your compost totals -- more people, or a higher per-person rate -- raises the CO2 savings estimate by the same proportion.
What counts toward compost per person per week?
Compost per person per week is meant to capture all compostable material one person typically contributes, including food scraps like vegetable trimmings and coffee grounds plus any yard waste routed to the same compost system, entered as a single combined rate in kilograms. The default of 1.5 kg per person per week is a starting estimate; households that compost more of their food waste rather than sending it to the trash will have a meaningfully higher real rate.
Does the calculator account for how long compost takes to finish?
No -- this calculator estimates the volume of raw compostable material generated over time, not the finished, cured compost you'd actually have on hand at any given moment. Real compost typically takes weeks to months to fully break down depending on the method (hot pile, cold pile, or vermicomposting), so the yearly figure here represents total material diverted from the trash over a year, not a snapshot of finished compost volume.
