How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Desired coat length (inches), Coat type, and Coat condition.
  2. Set Dog size class.
  3. Review the Blade/Comb number result.
  4. Use Achieved length (in) and Est. clipping time (min) to inform your decision.

What each input means

Desired coat length (inches)
Target finished coat length in inches (e.g., 0.5 = half inch).
Coat type
1 = Smooth/Short, 2 = Double coat, 3 = Curly/Wool, 4 = Wire/Harsh.
Coat condition
1 = Clean & brushed, 2 = Slightly tangled, 3 = Matted.
Dog size class
1 = Toy (<10 lb), 2 = Small (10-25 lb), 3 = Medium (25-50 lb), 4 = Large (50-80 lb), 5 = Giant (80+ lb).

What each result means

Blade/Comb number
Recommended blade number (higher = shorter cut) or attachment comb number.
Achieved length (in)
Approximate finished coat length in inches, accounting for coat spring-back.
Est. clipping time (min)
Estimated time for the clipping portion of the groom.
Recommended passes
Number of clipper passes recommended for an even finish.
Blade speed (1-3)
Recommended clipper speed: 1 = Low, 2 = Medium, 3 = High.
Spring-back %
Expected coat spring-back after cutting (curly/wire coats spring up).

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Desired coat length (inches) = 0.5, Coat type = 1, Coat condition = 1, Dog size class = 3 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Blade/Comb number
    3 = 3
  3. Calculate Achieved length
    Achieved length = achievedLength * (1 + springBackPct / 100)
    0.5 = 0.5
  4. Calculate Est. clipping time
    Est. clipping time = round(baseMinutes * sizeFactor * basePasses)
    8 = 8
