Breeding Soundness Score Calculator
Score bull breeding soundness examination (BSE) from scrotal circumference, semen morphology, and motility.
About this calculator
This calculator produces a 100-point composite score across four exam components -- scrotal circumference, progressive motility, normal morphology, and a user-entered physical exam score -- as an educational way to see how those measurements interact. It is NOT the same method a veterinarian uses in a real bull breeding soundness examination. The Society for Theriogenology's actual BSE standard classifies a bull as a satisfactory potential breeder only if he clears real minimum thresholds on each criterion separately -- at least 30% progressive sperm motility, at least 70% normal sperm morphology, and a minimum scrotal circumference that scales with age (roughly 30 cm at 12-15 months up to 34 cm at 24+ months) -- rather than summing them into one weighted number. This calculator's tiered point bands do echo those real minimums (its lowest-scoring band starts exactly at 30% motility and 70% morphology, matching the real satisfactory threshold), but its scrotal-circumference cutoffs are flat regardless of the bull's age, since this calculator has no age input, while the real standard is age-scaled. Scrotal Circumference carries the most scoring weight (up to 40 of 100 points, versus 20 each for motility, morphology, and the physical exam), reflecting that scrotal circumference correlates strongly with both sperm output and daughter fertility in beef cattle research.
Concentration is recorded for your reference alongside the exam but does not factor into the point total, since the real SFT criteria for a satisfactory rating don't assign it a specific point value either -- it's assessed qualitatively alongside motility and morphology rather than scored on its own scale. Use this tool to understand how the components of a BSE interact, not as a substitute for an actual veterinary breeding soundness examination and its real pass/fail classification. Recommended Cows/Bull, when a satisfactory classification is reached, reports a fixed 25 -- the commonly cited nationwide average stocking recommendation of roughly 25-30 cows per single mature bull under natural service -- rather than anything derived from this particular bull's scrotal circumference or composite score; there is no validated formula scaling a cow:bull ratio directly from BSE measurements, so this calculator doesn't invent one. A bull that doesn't reach a satisfactory classification isn't recommended for breeding at any ratio.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Scrotal Circumference, Progressive Motility, and Normal Morphology.
- Set Concentration and Physical Exam Score.
- Review Total BSE Score (/100) and Classification.
- Use Scrotal Circumference Score (/40) and Motility Score (/20) to inform your decision.
- Use the chart to visualize the results and explore different scenarios by adjusting inputs.
How the result changes with Scrotal Circumference
| Scrotal Circumference | Total BSE Score | Classification |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 63/100 | Classification Deferred |
| 26 | 63/100 | Classification Deferred |
| 50 | 93/100 | Satisfactory Potential Breeder |
What each input means
- Scrotal Circumference
- Measured at the largest point of the scrotum.
- Progressive Motility
- Percentage of progressively motile sperm.
- Normal Morphology
- Percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa.
- Concentration
- Sperm concentration (millions per mL).
- Physical Exam Score
- Physical soundness score (0-20) covering feet, legs, eyes, and reproductive anatomy.
What each result means
- Recommended Cows/Bull
- A fixed 25 when classified satisfactory -- the commonly cited nationwide average of 25-30 cows per mature bull under natural service -- not scaled by this bull's own measurements. 0 if not classified satisfactory.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same scoring method a veterinarian actually uses for a real BSE?
No. The Society for Theriogenology's real bull breeding soundness standard classifies a bull as satisfactory only if he separately clears real minimum thresholds -- at least 30% progressive motility, at least 70% normal morphology, and an age-scaled minimum scrotal circumference -- rather than summing everything into one weighted 100-point score the way this calculator does. This tool is an educational way to explore how those measurements interact, not a replacement for an actual veterinary exam and its real satisfactory/unsatisfactory/deferred classification.
Why does Scrotal Circumference carry more scoring weight than the other measurements?
Scrotal circumference is weighted up to 40 of the 100 points, twice as much as motility, morphology, or the physical exam score individually, reflecting that scrotal circumference correlates strongly with both daily sperm output and heritable daughter fertility in beef cattle research. Note that the real Society for Theriogenology standard also scales its own minimum scrotal-circumference threshold by the bull's age, which this calculator does not do since it has no age input.
Why doesn't entering a Concentration value change my Total BSE Score?
Concentration is recorded here for your reference alongside the exam but doesn't add to the point total, which mirrors how the real Society for Theriogenology satisfactory rating doesn't assign concentration its own point value either -- it's assessed qualitatively alongside motility and morphology rather than scored on a separate numeric scale. If your concentration reading is unusually low, discuss it with your veterinarian even if the other three scored components look strong.
What do the 30% motility and 70% morphology cutoffs in the scoring bands represent?
Those exact numbers match the real Society for Theriogenology minimum thresholds for a satisfactory potential breeder -- at least 30% progressive motility and at least 70% normal morphology. This calculator's lowest-scoring point band starts exactly at those real minimums, so a bull scoring in the bottom motility or morphology band here is at or below the real threshold a veterinarian would also flag as a concern.
How is Recommended Cows/Bull calculated, and does a larger scrotal circumference mean more cows?
It isn't scaled by scrotal circumference or by the exam score at all. Once a bull reaches a satisfactory classification (70+ points here), this calculator reports a fixed 25 -- the commonly cited nationwide average stocking recommendation of roughly 25-30 cows per single mature bull under natural service. There is no validated formula that derives a cow:bull ratio directly from BSE measurements like scrotal circumference, so this tool doesn't invent one; a bull that doesn't reach a satisfactory classification isn't recommended for breeding at any ratio. Actual stocking decisions should also account for the bull's age and experience, pasture terrain and size, and the length of the breeding season -- consult your veterinarian or extension service for your specific herd.
