Burnout Assessment Calculator
Assess burnout risk across three dimensions — emotional exhaustion, cynicism/depersonalization, and professional efficacy — based on Maslach Burnout Inventory concepts.
About this calculator
The burnout assessment combines three 0–10 ratings: emotional exhaustion, cynicism or depersonalization, and professional efficacy. Exhaustion and cynicism enter directly, while efficacy is reversed by subtracting it from 10. The engine averages those three burden components and rounds the result to one decimal place. High efficacy therefore lowers the overall burnout score; low efficacy raises it. On an equal-unit basis, all three dimensions have the same influence on the average, despite the grounding snapshot making one input appear largest around its particular default. Each dimension also receives a separate concern code.
Exhaustion and cynicism are level 1 from 0–3, level 2 from 4–6, and level 3 from 7–10. Efficacy concern applies those cutoffs to the reversed value: an efficacy rating of 10 means no reversed burden, while an efficacy rating of 0 means the maximum concern. Overall risk uses the rounded average, with level 2 beginning at 4 and level 3 at 7. This is a transparent heuristic inspired by three common burnout dimensions, not a licensed inventory or clinical diagnosis. It does not ask about workload, control, fairness, values conflict, recovery time, duration, workplace conditions, physical illness, depression, or anxiety. A balanced average can also hide a severe single dimension, so the component codes and chart deserve attention alongside the overall category.

How to Use This Calculator
- Rate your Emotional Exhaustion level — how depleted you feel from your work demands.
- Rate your Cynicism / Depersonalization — detachment or negative feelings toward your job or colleagues.
- Rate Professional Efficacy — how competent and accomplished you feel at work.
- Review Overall Burnout Score and Risk Category to understand your current burnout stage.
- Target the highest scoring dimension first: high exhaustion = rest; high cynicism = reconnect with values; low efficacy = skill-building.
How the result changes with Professional Efficacy
| Professional Efficacy | Overall Burnout Score | Risk Category |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5.3 / 10 | 2 (1=Low, 2=Moderate, 3=High) |
| 4.5 | 4.8 / 10 | 2 (1=Low, 2=Moderate, 3=High) |
| 9 | 3.3 / 10 | 1 (1=Low, 2=Moderate, 3=High) |
| 10 | 3 / 10 | 1 (1=Low, 2=Moderate, 3=High) |
What each input means
- Emotional Exhaustion
- Rate your emotional exhaustion level, 0 = not at all exhausted, 10 = completely exhausted.
- Cynicism / Depersonalization
- Rate your cynicism/detachment toward work, 0 = highly engaged, 10 = completely detached.
- Professional Efficacy
- Rate your sense of professional accomplishment, 0 = none, 10 = very high. Lower efficacy indicates higher burnout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does higher professional efficacy lower burnout?
The formula converts efficacy into a burden component by subtracting the rating from 10. Raising efficacy by one point therefore lowers the unrounded three-part average by one third of a point.
Do exhaustion and cynicism count more than efficacy?
No. Exhaustion, cynicism, and reversed efficacy are added and divided by three, giving equal per-point influence. Differences seen at the defaults come from their starting values and rounding, not unequal coefficients.
How are the overall risk categories assigned?
The one-decimal overall score maps to low below 4, moderate from 4 through 6.9, and high at 7 or more. Individual dimension levels use whole-rating boundaries at 4 and 7.
