Cutting & Bulking Calculator

Calculate daily calories and macro targets for cutting, bulking, or maintenance phases based on your TDEE and body composition.

About this calculator

The cutting and bulking calculator turns a supplied total daily energy expenditure, or TDEE, into a calorie target and a complete macronutrient split. Goal is the central switch. Cutting uses 78 percent of TDEE, bulking uses 112 percent, and maintenance keeps TDEE unchanged. The estimated weekly scale change comes from the resulting daily deficit or surplus multiplied across seven days and divided by 3,500 calories per pound. That is a mathematical energy estimate, not a guarantee of tissue change. Protein is based on total body weight rather than lean mass: one gram per pound for cutting, 0.82 gram per pound for bulking, and 0.9 gram per pound for maintenance.

Fat receives 28 percent of calories while cutting and 25 percent otherwise. Carbohydrate fills the calories remaining after protein and fat, with a floor of zero. TDEE therefore has the largest direct effect on the calorie target, while body weight strongly affects protein and the carbohydrate remainder. Body-fat percentage is used only to report lean mass in kilograms; it does not alter the prescribed calories or macros. The model omits adaptive metabolism, changing water and glycogen, training volume, dietary adherence, and differences between gained or lost fat and lean tissue. Recalculate when the underlying TDEE or weight estimate changes.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your current body weight and estimated body fat percentage.
  2. Set your maintenance calorie level (TDEE).
  3. Select cut, bulk, or maintain; the calculator uses a fixed adjustment for that goal.
  4. Review daily calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat, estimated weekly change, and lean mass.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Body Weight = 170, Body Fat % = 18, Goal = 1, TDEE = 2400 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Daily Calories
    1872 = 1872
  3. Calculate Protein
    Protein
    170 = 170
  4. Calculate Carbs
    Carbs

Frequently Asked Questions

What calorie adjustment does each goal apply?

Cutting sets daily calories to 78 percent of TDEE, bulking sets them to 112 percent, and maintenance uses TDEE itself. The weekly-change estimate follows the corresponding deficit or surplus.

Does body-fat percentage change the macro targets?

No. In this engine it changes only the displayed lean mass. Calories come from TDEE and goal, protein comes from body weight and goal, and fat is a goal-dependent calorie share.

How are carbohydrate grams determined?

The calculator subtracts protein calories and allocated fat calories from the daily calorie target, divides the nonnegative remainder by four, and rounds the resulting carbohydrate grams.

Why is protein higher during a cut than a bulk?

The encoded rule assigns one gram per pound during a cut, 0.82 gram per pound during a bulk, and 0.9 gram per pound at maintenance, independent of body-fat percentage.
