Jet Lag Recovery Calculator
Calculate days to adjust from timezone change with light therapy and melatonin timing recommendations.
About this calculator
Recovery starts as a rate times a distance and is then whittled down by a chain of multipliers. Flying east costs a full day per time zone; flying west costs about two thirds of a day, reflecting the fact that a body clock running slightly longer than twenty-four hours finds it easier to stay up late than to fall asleep early. Age applies next, in two steps rather than smoothly: nothing below forty-one, a fifteen percent penalty from forty-one, and a thirty percent penalty from fifty-one. Each intervention you switch on then scales the running figure — melatonin multiplies it by seven tenths, strategic light by three quarters — so using both together is multiplicative rather than additive and cuts the estimate to about half. Six zones eastward with both aids and no age penalty resolves to roughly three days; drop melatonin and it becomes five; drop both and you are back at the raw six.
A one-day floor means no combination can return zero. Because the headline number is finally shown as a whole day, small differences vanish: a forty-five year old and a fifty-five year old both read four days on the default trip even though their underlying figures differ by half a day. The pre-trip shift schedule caps at five days regardless of how far you fly, and shifts an hour a day for trips of three zones or fewer, an hour and a half beyond that. Note that the melatonin and light guidance text is chosen by travel direction alone and is printed whether or not you said you would use either.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Timezone Shift as the number of hours between home and destination, from 1 to 12.
- Choose the travel direction; eastward is scored at a full day per zone and westward at about two thirds of that.
- Answer the melatonin and light therapy questions honestly — each Yes applies a separate reduction to the estimate.
- Enter your age, which adds a penalty above forty and a larger one above fifty.
- Read Days to Full Recovery alongside the Severity band, then follow the Pre-Trip Adjust Days, Melatonin Advice and Light Exposure Advice rows.
How the result changes with Timezone Shift
| Timezone Shift | Days to Full Recovery |
|---|---|
| 3 | 2 days |
| 4.5 | 2 days |
| 9 | 5 days |
| 12 | 6 days |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is flying west scored as easier than flying east?
The eastward rate is one day per time zone and the westward rate is 0.67 days per zone, a deliberate asymmetry matching the body clock's preference for delaying rather than advancing. On the default six-hour shift with both interventions active, that is the difference between a three-day and a two-day estimate.
Do melatonin and light therapy add up or compound?
They compound. Melatonin multiplies the running estimate by 0.7 and light therapy by 0.75, applied one after the other, so selecting both leaves just over half the original figure. Turning melatonin off alone raises a three-day default estimate to five days.
I changed my age from forty-five to fifty-five and the answer stayed the same. Why?
Age enters as two fixed steps, fifteen percent above forty and thirty percent above fifty, and the final figure is displayed as whole days. On the default trip those two tiers produce about 3.6 and 4.1 days, and both round to four, so the difference is real but not visible.
Why does the pre-trip adjustment stop at five days for a twelve-hour flight?
That schedule is deliberately capped at five days no matter how many zones you cross, on the view that shifting your clock for longer before departure is impractical. The daily shift size does respond, moving from one hour for trips of three zones or fewer to an hour and a half above that.
