Male Pattern Baldness Cost Calculator

Treatment cost comparison: medical vs surgical options.

About this calculator

This calculator projects six hair-loss treatment paths -- finasteride alone, minoxidil alone, both combined, transplant plus maintenance meds, PRP therapy, and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) -- to the same Years to project horizon, then reports the cheapest one as Lowest option cost. Years to project has the single largest effect on Combined meds total, since it scales the entire monthly-cost calculation linearly across both drugs at once, more than a matching percentage change to either drug's price alone. Transplant + meds total is dominated by the one-time Hair transplant cost itself, which sets the dollar size of every "touch-up" procedure at roughly 40% of the original cost -- but how many touch-ups get added is a separate question, decided purely by Years to project (one gets added approximately every 6 years once the projection period exceeds 6 years, regardless of how much the transplant itself cost), on top of ongoing finasteride to preserve the surrounding hair.

PRP therapy assumes 3 sessions in the first year and 2 per year after that, so PRP session cost has the largest effect on its total. Separately, the calculator projects your Norwood stage forward using a fixed 0.15 stages/year rate (not personalized to age of onset or family history the way the companion Hair Loss Progression calculator is), reduced to about a third of that rate if you're projecting the treated scenario. These are illustrative cost ranges based on typical US pricing, not quotes -- actual costs vary substantially by provider, insurance coverage, and geography.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your current Norwood stage (1–7), age hair loss started, and current age.
  2. Set the projection period in years and monthly costs for finasteride and minoxidil.
  3. Enter hair transplant cost ($), PRP session cost ($) if applicable.
  4. Read Combined meds total ($) and Transplant + meds total ($) to compare treatment cost options over time.
  5. Review Lowest option cost ($) and Cost per month to choose the most affordable treatment path.

What each input means

Current Norwood stage (1-7)
Your current hair loss stage on the Norwood scale: 1=full head, 7=extensive loss.
Age hair loss started
Age when you first noticed significant hair thinning.
Current age
Your current age.
Years to project
How many years into the future to calculate costs.
Finasteride monthly ($)
Monthly cost of generic finasteride (typically $10-30).
Minoxidil monthly ($)
Monthly cost of minoxidil (typically $15-40).
Hair transplant cost ($)
One-time FUE hair transplant cost (typically $4,000-15,000).
PRP session cost ($)
Cost per PRP (platelet-rich plasma) session (typically $500-1,500).

What each result means

Combined meds total ($)
Total cost of finasteride + minoxidil over the projection period.
Finasteride only total ($)
Total finasteride cost over the projection period.
Minoxidil only total ($)
Total minoxidil cost over the projection period.
Transplant + meds total ($)
Hair transplant plus maintenance finasteride over the projection period.
PRP therapy total ($)
Total PRP therapy cost (3 sessions first year, 2/year after).
Scalp micropigmentation total ($)
SMP initial treatment plus touch-ups every 5 years.
Projected Norwood (no treatment)
Estimated Norwood stage without treatment after the projection period.
Projected Norwood (with treatment)
Estimated Norwood stage with finasteride treatment.
Lowest option cost ($)
Cost of the least expensive treatment option.
Combined meds per month ($)
Monthly cost for combined finasteride + minoxidil.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Current Norwood stage (1-7) = 3, Age hair loss started = 25, Current age = 35, Years to project = 10 = 8 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Combined meds total
    Combined meds total
    4800 = $4,800
  3. Calculate Finasteride only total
    Finasteride only total
    1800 = $1,800
  4. Calculate Minoxidil only total
    Minoxidil only total
    3000 = $3,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the projection period affect combined medication cost more than the drug prices?

Years to project multiplies the entire monthly cost of both finasteride and minoxidil at once, so a given percentage change in the time horizon moves Combined meds total more than the same percentage change to either drug's monthly price alone, which only scales its own share of the combined total.

What drives the cost of a hair transplant over time?

Transplant + meds total is dominated by the one-time Hair transplant cost you enter, which also determines the dollar size of each "touch-up" procedure -- the calculator adds a touch-up worth roughly 40% of the original cost approximately every 6 years once your projection period exceeds 6 years, plus ongoing finasteride to maintain the surrounding native hair.

How is the PRP therapy total calculated?

PRP therapy total assumes 3 sessions in the first year (front-loaded, since response typically requires an initial series) and 2 sessions per year in every subsequent year, both priced at your entered PRP session cost -- making that per-session price the largest driver of the total over any realistic projection period.

Is the Norwood stage projection here the same as the dedicated Hair Loss Progression calculator?

No -- this calculator uses a single fixed progression rate of 0.15 stages per year for everyone, while the dedicated Hair Loss Progression calculator personalizes that rate using your age of onset and family history. Use this tool's projection as a rough cost planning reference, not as your primary progression estimate.
