Omega-3 Dosing Calculator

Calculate EPA and DHA targets by health goal, and capsules needed for fish oil, krill oil, or algae supplements.

About this calculator

This calculator sets separate EPA and DHA targets from your health goal, then works out how many capsules of your chosen supplement type hit both. The goal selects a fixed split: general wellness aims at 250 mg of each, heart health at 600 EPA and 400 DHA -- a combined 1000 mg EPA+DHA per day that follows the American Heart Association's scientific statement on fish, fish oil, and omega-3 fatty acids (Kris-Etherton et al., 2002), which recommends roughly a gram a day of EPA+DHA for cardiovascular benefit -- and inflammation or joint support is EPA-dominant at 2000/500, and brain or mood support flips to DHA-dominant at 500/1000. Capsules per Day is set by whichever fatty acid is harder to reach — the engine divides each target by the capsule's content and takes the larger, rounded up.

That limiting-nutrient rule produces a real trade-off between supplement types: a standard fish oil capsule (180 EPA / 120 DHA) serves the inflammation goal poorly, needing 12 capsules for the 2000 mg EPA target, while an algae capsule (100 EPA / 300 DHA) needs 20 — but for the brain goal, algae's DHA-heavy profile needs only 5 where fish oil needs 9. Daily Cost multiplies the capsule count by a per-capsule price of 15 cents for fish oil, 50 for krill, and 40 for algae, so krill's weaker EPA/DHA density and premium price compound each other. Not modeled: triglyceride versus ethyl-ester form absorption, oxidation freshness, or prescription-strength products.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select your Health Goal from the dropdown: General wellness, Heart health, Inflammation/joint, or Brain/mood.
  2. Select your Supplement Type from the dropdown: Fish oil (standard), Krill oil, or Algae oil (vegan).
  3. Review the EPA Target and DHA Target (mg/day) calculated for your selected health goal.
  4. Check the Capsules per Day needed to hit those EPA and DHA targets given your supplement type's EPA/DHA content per capsule.
  5. Review the Daily Cost estimate based on the number of capsules and the per-capsule price for your supplement type.

What each input means

Health Goal
Sets the EPA and DHA targets for your goal.
Supplement Type

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the inflammation goal need so many more capsules than the others?

That goal carries a 2000 mg EPA target — four to eight times the EPA targets of the other goals. Since a standard fish oil capsule holds 180 mg of EPA, the engine needs 12 capsules to reach it, and algae oil (100 mg EPA per capsule) needs 20.

How does the calculator decide between the EPA and DHA targets when sizing capsules?

It computes the capsule count for each target separately and takes the larger one — the limiting nutrient sets the dose. That guarantees both targets are met, but it also means you overshoot one fatty acid whenever the capsule's EPA:DHA ratio doesn't match your goal's.

Is krill oil ever the cheapest option here?

Krill is never the cheapest, but it isn't always the most expensive either. At 50 cents a capsule with the weakest EPA/DHA density of the three types (150/90 mg), it's the priciest way to hit the general wellness, heart health, and brain/mood goals. For the inflammation/joint goal, though, algae oil overtakes it: that goal's 2000 mg EPA target forces 20 algae capsules (EPA-thin at only 100 mg each) against 14 krill capsules, so algae's daily cost of $8.00 edges out krill's $7.00 — fish oil stays cheapest at $1.80 across the board.

Why is algae oil efficient for the brain/mood goal but terrible for inflammation?

Algae capsules are DHA-heavy: 300 mg DHA but only 100 mg EPA. The brain goal's 1000 mg DHA target only needs about 4 capsules, but its smaller 500 mg EPA target is the actual limiting nutrient at algae's low EPA density — 500/100 mg works out to 5 capsules, one more than the DHA side alone would suggest — so the engine lands on 5. The inflammation goal flips the mismatch to an extreme: its 2000 mg EPA target forces 20 algae capsules. The gap between capsule ratio and goal ratio is what the capsule count exposes either way.
