Menstrual Period Calculator

Track your menstrual cycle and predict your next period, ovulation date, and fertile window. Essential for family planning or period tracking.

About this calculator

Enter Days Since Last Period Started (how many days ago your period began), Average Cycle Length (the typical span from one period's start to the next), and Period Duration (how many days your bleeding usually lasts), and this calculator projects your next period, ovulation window, and current cycle phase from those three numbers. Next Period In is Average Cycle Length minus Days Since Last Period Started -- if that figure would come out zero or negative (meaning your predicted period date has already passed), the calculator adds a full cycle back on so the result always reads as days remaining, not days overdue. Ovulation In works the same way, built from the standard 14-day luteal-phase assumption: ovulation is estimated to fall 14 days before the next period, and the Fertile Window spans five days before that ovulation estimate through one day after it, reflecting how long sperm can survive and the egg's viability window.

Current Cycle Day counts forward from day 1 of your last period, and Current Phase reports Menstrual, Follicular, Fertile Window, Ovulation, or Luteal based on where that day falls relative to Period Duration and the estimated ovulation day. Average Cycle Length has the largest effect on Next Period In and Ovulation In because it directly sets where both land; Period Duration only affects Current Phase, deciding whether today counts as the Menstrual phase, and otherwise leaves the day-count predictions unchanged. This is a statistical estimate based on average cycle timing, not a measurement of your actual hormone levels or ovulation -- it cannot account for cycle irregularity, PCOS, recent hormonal birth control use, stress, illness, or any factor that shifts an individual cycle away from its historical average.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Days Since Last Period Started, Average Cycle Length, and Period Duration.
  2. Review the Next Period In (days) result.
  3. Use Ovulation In (days) and Fertile Window Starts In (days) to inform your decision.
  4. Use the chart to visualize the results and explore different scenarios by adjusting inputs.

What each input means

Days Since Last Period Started
How many days ago did your last period start?
Average Cycle Length
Number of days from the start of one period to the start of the next.
Period Duration
How many days does your period typically last?

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Days Since Last Period Started = 14, Average Cycle Length = 28, Period Duration = 5 = 3 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Next Period In
    14 = 14
  3. Calculate Ovulation In
    28 = 28
  4. Calculate Fertile Window Starts In
    23 = 23

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Average Cycle Length affect my results more than Period Duration?

Average Cycle Length directly sets where Next Period In and Ovulation In fall, since both are calculated as Cycle Length minus days already elapsed, then adjusted with the fixed 14-day luteal-phase rule. Period Duration only decides whether today counts as your Menstrual phase in the Current Phase result -- it does not shift the day-count predictions at all, so a longer or shorter period has zero effect on when the calculator expects your next period or ovulation to occur.

How is the fertile window calculated?

The Fertile Window spans from five days before the estimated ovulation day through one day after it, based on the fact that sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days while an egg is typically viable for about 24 hours after release. Ovulation itself is estimated as 14 days before your next expected period, following the standard luteal-phase length used in most cycle-tracking guidance.

What happens if my expected period date has already passed?

If Next Period In, Ovulation In, or the fertile window figures would come out zero or negative -- meaning the predicted date already happened based on your inputs -- the calculator adds a full cycle length back onto that figure. This keeps every result expressed as days remaining rather than showing a confusing negative or zero number, effectively rolling the prediction forward to the next cycle.

Can this calculator diagnose irregular cycles or fertility problems?

No. This tool applies a fixed 14-day luteal-phase assumption to your reported Average Cycle Length and offers a statistical estimate, not a clinical assessment. It cannot detect PCOS, thyroid issues, recent hormonal contraceptive use, or the natural variation many people experience cycle to cycle, so treat the predictions as a starting reference rather than a guarantee.
