Probiotic CFU Calculator

Determine the target CFU count and strain diversity for probiotic supplements based on health goal and age.

About this calculator

This calculator turns a health goal and an age group into a target CFU count (in billions), a recommended strain count, and a refrigeration flag. Health Goal is the engine of the result: general digestive support targets 10 billion CFU, immune support 15, IBS or bloating 30, and antibiotic recovery 40 — a fourfold spread from a single dropdown-style code. Age Group then scales that target multiplicatively: adults use the base figure, children get 30 percent of it, and seniors get a 20 percent uplift, with the result rounded to a whole billion.

Recommended Strains is read straight from the health goal (4 for general use, 8 for IBS, 6 for immune or antibiotic recovery) and is not adjusted for age — a child and an adult with the same goal get the same strain count at very different CFU totals. The Refrigeration flag trips to Yes whenever the age-adjusted target exceeds 20 billion CFU or the strain count exceeds 6, on the logic that high-potency, multi-strain products are typically the ones needing cold storage. What the calculator does not model is strain-specific evidence — it counts strains without distinguishing which ones — nor product quality markers like third-party testing or guaranteed potency through expiry.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select your Health Goal from the dropdown: General Digestive, IBS/Bloating, Immune Support, or Antibiotic Recovery.
  2. Select your Age Group from the dropdown: Child (2-12), Adult (13-64), or Senior (65+).
  3. Review the Target CFU, shown in billions, adjusted for your age group.
  4. Review the Recommended Strains count for your selected health goal.
  5. Check the Refrigeration output (0 = No, 1 = Yes) to see if your target CFU and strain count call for a refrigerated product.

What each input means

Health Goal
Sets the target CFU range and recommended strain count.
Age Group
Scales the target CFU relative to the adult baseline.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Health Goal = 1, Age Group = 2 = 2 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Target CFU
    Target CFU
    10 = 10
  3. Calculate Recommended Strains

Frequently Asked Questions

Which input changes my target CFU the most?

It depends on where you start, and Age Group is not the minor input it looks like. Health Goal sets the base target across a 10-40 billion CFU range (a 4x spread) and dominates at the Adult default, where Age Group only multiplies by 1.0. But Age Group's own multiplier spans 0.3 (child) to 1.2 (senior) — also a 4x range — so at higher health goals its absolute swing gets large too: at the antibiotic-recovery goal (40 billion base), moving from child to senior takes the target from 12 to 48 billion CFU, a 300 percent swing, not a modest 20 percent. Neither input is safely ignorable.

Why does my child's recommendation show the same strain count as an adult's?

Strain count is looked up from the Health Goal alone — 4 for general, 8 for IBS, 6 for immune or antibiotic recovery — and the age multiplier applies only to the CFU target. A child gets 30 percent of the adult CFU but the identical number of strains.

What triggers the Refrigeration flag?

Two conditions, either one sufficient: an age-adjusted CFU target above 20 billion, or a strain count above 6. Antibiotic recovery at adult dosing (40 billion) trips the first condition automatically; IBS (8 strains) trips the second regardless of age.

Does a higher CFU target always mean a better probiotic?

Not according to this model — the targets reflect typical studied ranges per goal, and the engine assigns antibiotic recovery the highest figure (40 billion) because that use case has the most aggressive dosing evidence. More CFU beyond your goal's range is not treated as additional benefit.
