How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the structure total cubic footage (length times width times height of all spaces).
  2. Input the target gas concentration in oz of sulfuryl fluoride per 1,000 cu ft per label requirements.
  3. Set the temperature at the time of fumigation as it affects gas penetration.
  4. Review the Total Chemical Required in pounds and the Exposure Time needed.
  5. Use the Aeration Time output to schedule when occupants can safely re-enter.

How the result changes with Building length (ft)

What each input means

Building length (ft)
Exterior length of the structure.
Building width (ft)
Exterior width of the structure.
Building height (ft)
Peak height from ground to roof ridge.
Target pest (0=Drywood Termite, 1=Beetle, 2=Bedbug)
0 = Drywood termites, 1 = Powderpost beetles, 2 = Bedbugs. Different pests require different dosages.
Exposure time (hours)
Duration the structure remains under tarp. Typical: 16–24 hours for termites.
Average temperature (°F)
Ambient temperature during fumigation. Below 70°F requires higher dosages.

What each result means

Building volume (ft³)
Interior volume of the structure.
Tarped volume (ft³)
Effective volume under tarp including overhang (~15% more).
Tarp area needed (ft²)
Total tarpaulin surface area with overlap allowance.
Adjusted dosage (oz-hr/ft³)
Temperature-corrected fumigant dosage rate.
Fumigant required (lbs)
Total weight of fumigant (Vikane) needed.
30-lb cylinders needed
Number of small (30 lb) Vikane cylinders.
120-lb cylinders needed
Number of large (120 lb) Vikane cylinders.
Fumigant cost ($)
Cost of the fumigant chemical.
Tarp rental cost ($)
Tarpaulin rental and setup cost.
Labor cost ($)
Crew labor for setup, monitoring, and aeration.
Total estimated cost ($)
Combined fumigant, tarp, and labor cost.
Cost per ft³ ($)
Total cost per cubic foot of structure.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Building length (ft) = 50, Building width (ft) = 30, Building height (ft) = 20, Target pest (0=Drywood Termite, 1=Beetle, 2=Bedbug) = 0 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Building volume
    Building volume = lengthFt * widthFt * heightFt
    30000 = 30000
  3. Calculate Fumigant required
    Fumigant required = totalFumigantOz / 16
    2156.3 = 2156.3
  4. Calculate Total estimated cost
    Total estimated cost = fumigantCost + tarpCost + laborCost
    20205.38 = $20,205.38
  5. Calculate Tarped volume
    Tarped volume = buildingVolumeCuFt * 1.15
    34500 = 34500
  6. Calculate Tarp area needed
    Tarp area needed = (roofArea + wallArea) * 1.2
    5640 = 5640
