How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the door location (exterior, interior, high-traffic commercial, residential).
  2. Set the security requirement level based on risk assessment.
  3. Input the expected door cycles per day to verify grade durability rating.
  4. Review the recommended ANSI/BHMA grade (Grade 1 for commercial, Grade 2 for light commercial, Grade 3 for residential).
  5. Select a lock with a cycle rating exceeding the expected lifetime door cycles.

What each input means

Traffic level
1 = Low (<50 cycles/day), 2 = Medium (50-250), 3 = High (250-1000), 4 = Very high (1000+).
Security need
1 = Minimal (interior), 2 = Moderate (exterior residential), 3 = High (commercial), 4 = Maximum (restricted).
Building type
1 = Residential, 2 = Commercial, 3 = Institutional (hospital/school), 4 = High-security (gov/financial).
ADA required?
1 if ADA accessibility compliance is required, 0 otherwise.
Exterior door?
1 for exterior/entry door, 0 for interior door.
Fire-rated door?
1 if the door is fire-rated (requires UL-listed hardware), 0 otherwise.

What each result means

Recommended ANSI grade
ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 (best), 2 (commercial), or 3 (residential).
Security score
Weighted score used to determine grade recommendation.
Min cycle life
Minimum lock cycle test requirement for the recommended grade.
Typical lockset cost
Average cost per lockset at the recommended grade.
Closer required (1/0)
Whether a door closer is required by code or best practice.
Closer cost
Cost for a door closer at the recommended grade level.
Max opening force (lbf)
Maximum allowed opening force per ADA or fire code requirements.
Total per opening
Estimated total cost per door opening including lockset and closer.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Traffic level = 2, Security need = 2, Building type = 2, ADA required? = 1 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Recommended ANSI grade
    2 = 2
  3. Calculate Security score
    11 = 11
  4. Calculate Min cycle life
    Min cycle life = Record<number
    400000 = 400000
