About this calculator
This is a rough planning-stage cost estimate, not a contractor quote — actual pricing varies heavily by region, site access, and soil conditions. Total Estimated Cost sums five independent line items that each respond differently to your inputs. Excavation scales with pool volume (Pool Length x Pool Width x Average Depth), so it grows with all three dimensions together. Pool Shell depends on both surface area (Pool Length x Pool Width) and the selected Pool Type: Concrete/Gunite and Vinyl Liner are priced purely per square foot of surface, while Fiberglass carries a large flat base cost (a prefabricated shell) plus a smaller per-square-foot add-on — which means fiberglass tends to be relatively more expensive for a small pool and relatively less expensive per square foot as the pool gets larger, since the flat base cost is spread over more area. Equipment & Plumbing (pump, filter, skimmer, wiring) also scales with surface area but with a smaller per-square-foot rate plus its own flat base.
Decking only appears at all when Include Deck is selected, and then scales with surface area (assuming a deck footprint of about 75% of the pool's own area). Include Heater and Include Salt System each add a fixed dollar amount to the total regardless of pool size, and neither touches Excavation, Pool Shell, Equipment & Plumbing, or Decking — they are pure additions layered on top. Est. Annual Maintenance is a flat, pool-type-dependent yearly figure that is entirely separate from Total Estimated Cost — it is not amortized into the build price.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a fiberglass pool sometimes cost more than a concrete one of the same size?
Fiberglass pricing in this estimator is a large flat base cost (a prefabricated shell) plus a relatively small per-square-foot add-on, while concrete/gunite and vinyl liner are priced purely per square foot with no flat component. For a small pool the fiberglass flat base dominates and can exceed a similarly sized concrete shell's cost; for a larger pool the flat base gets spread over more area and fiberglass becomes comparatively cheaper per square foot.
Does adding a heater or salt system change the cost of the pool shell itself?
No — Include Heater and Include Salt System each add a fixed dollar amount directly to Total Estimated Cost and do not feed into Excavation, Pool Shell, Equipment & Plumbing, or Decking at all. Selecting either option changes the total by exactly its own flat cost (about $4,000 for the heater, about $2,500 for the salt system) no matter what size or type of pool you've configured.
How is the Decking cost calculated?
Decking is only added to the total when Include Deck is selected. When it is, the estimator assumes a deck footprint equal to about 75% of the pool's own surface area (Pool Length x Pool Width) and prices that footprint per square foot, so a longer or wider pool produces a proportionally larger, more expensive deck alongside the larger pool shell itself.
Is Est. Annual Maintenance included in the Total Estimated Cost?
No. Est. Annual Maintenance is a separate, ongoing yearly figure that depends only on Pool Type — it estimates what you'll spend each year on chemicals, cleaning, and upkeep after the pool is built, and it is not added into or amortized within Total Estimated Cost, which covers the one-time build price only.
