Wayfinding Sign Calculator
Directional sign count from building layout and ADA requirements.
About this calculator
Building signage isn't one product — it's several distinct categories each driven by a different piece of the building's layout, and this calculator tallies each one separately before rolling them into a total. Room ID signs equal your room count directly (every permanent room needs one under the ADA Standards' §216.2 signage scoping provision), and when ADA compliance is required, every one of those also needs tactile characters and Grade 2 braille per §703.2-703.4. Directional signs come from corridor intersections (decision points) plus one sign per floor for every two stairways/elevators serving that floor's lobby, while floor directory boards are simply one per floor. Exit signage follows IBC 1013 logic: a sign at every exit door, a sign at every stairway landing on every floor, and a rough estimate of additional corridor exit signs (75% of intersection count) for maintaining exit-sign visibility along travel paths.
Stairway signs double up — floor ID plus re-entry information at every landing on every floor — and restroom signage assumes roughly one restroom per 10 rooms (minimum two), each needing two signs. Overhead/suspended signs are estimated as about 30% of directional signs, reflecting that larger decision points typically get ceiling-mounted rather than wall-mounted signage. Each category carries its own per-unit cost (illuminated exit signs and floor directories cost more than a simple room ID plate), and a 35% installation markup is applied to the combined sign cost for the total project figure. Because the ratios connecting rooms, floors, and stairways to sign counts are industry rules of thumb rather than a code citation for your specific jurisdiction, verify final sign types and placement against your local building and accessibility code before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Tactile/Braille sign counts equal Room ID signs only when ADA required is checked?
The calculator sets Tactile/Braille Signs equal to Total Rooms when ADA Required is on, and to zero when it's off — it's a direct pass-through of the room count, not an independent estimate, reflecting that the 2010 ADA Standards require raised characters and Grade 2 braille on every permanent room ID sign that's provided (§703.2-703.3), on a sign that §216.2 requires in the first place for permanent rooms and spaces — not just on some of them.
How is the Directional Signs count derived from corridor intersections and floors?
It's Corridor Intersections plus an elevator-lobby component: for buildings with more than one floor, each floor gets a lobby sign count equal to the number of floors times at least one sign per two stairways serving that floor, rounded up. A single-floor building has no elevator lobby signs at all, since floor-to-floor wayfinding at elevators isn't needed.
Why does the Exit Signs total include a 'corridor exit signs' component not tied to an exact code citation?
Corridor Exit Signs is estimated as 75% of your Corridor Intersections count, representing additional illuminated exit signage needed so an exit sign stays visible from any point in a corridor per IBC 1013 — but it's a rule-of-thumb ratio, not a calculation of actual sightline distances in your floor plan. Total Exit Signs also adds a sign at every Exit Door you entered and one at every stairway landing on every floor.
What drives the Restroom Signs count, and why is it always an even number?
The calculator assumes roughly one restroom per 10 rooms, with a minimum of two restrooms regardless of building size, then multiplies that restroom count by 2 to account for a sign at each restroom — for example, a men's/women's or all-gender pair — so the output is always an even number. It's a ratio-based estimate, not a count of restrooms you've actually specified.
