FSA vs HSA Comparison Calculator
Compare the tax savings and long-term value of Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) vs Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
About this calculator
FSAs and HSAs both let you set aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses, but this calculator highlights the structural difference that matters most over time: an FSA is generally use-it-or-lose-it within the plan year, while an HSA rolls over indefinitely and can be invested. Both sides apply the same combined marginal tax rate and FICA savings to whatever contribution you enter, but each is capped independently against its own statutory limit before that tax savings is calculated, so entering one contribution figure can result in two different capped amounts if it exceeds either limit. FSA Forfeited estimates money lost if your planned contribution exceeds your expected medical expenses for the year, since unused FSA funds typically don't carry forward.
On the HSA side, any contribution left over after expected medical expenses is projected forward as an investment balance, compounding annually at your entered rate of return — reflecting that HSA tax savings apply to the full contribution regardless of whether it's spent on medical care or left to grow, unlike an FSA, where money not spent by year-end is simply lost. HSA Long-Term Advantage sums these effects into one comparison figure, and it tends to widen considerably the longer the projection period runs, since investment compounding needs time to build meaningful separation between the two accounts.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your expected annual healthcare out-of-pocket expenses.
- Select your marginal tax bracket to see the tax-savings calculation.
- Enter your planned annual contribution amount; it's automatically capped at the FSA limit for the FSA side and the HSA individual limit for the HSA side.
- Set your expected HSA investment return and the number of years to project to see how the HSA balance could grow.
- Compare the FSA and HSA tax savings, FSA forfeiture risk, and HSA long-term advantage outputs side by side.
How the result changes with Planned Contribution
| Planned Contribution | HSA Projected Balance | HSA Long-Term Advantage |

| $2,250.00 | $3,695.90 | $3,945.90 |
| $4,500.00 | $35,480.64 | $37,177.14 |
| $7,500.00 | $35,480.64 | $37,177.14 |
What each input means
- Expected Annual Medical Expenses
- Your anticipated out-of-pocket medical costs this year.
- Planned Contribution
- How much you plan to contribute. FSA max is $3,400; HSA max is $4,400 (individual).
- Marginal Tax Bracket
- Your federal marginal income tax rate.
- HSA Investment Return
- Expected annual return if you invest your HSA balance. 0% if you keep it in cash.
- Years to Project
- Number of years to project the HSA investment growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the FSA side carry forfeiture risk that the HSA side doesn't?
Most FSA plans require unused contributions to be spent by the end of the plan year — sometimes with a small grace period or limited carryover — or the money is forfeited back to the employer. HSAs have no such deadline: any unspent balance simply stays in the account indefinitely, which is the core structural reason this calculator only tracks a forfeiture risk on the FSA side.
Why do the FSA and HSA sides cap my Planned Contribution differently?
The same entered contribution amount is checked independently against each account type's own statutory annual limit — the FSA limit and the HSA individual limit are set separately and typically differ from one another. If your entered contribution exceeds one limit but not the other, that side's calculation is capped down while the other side uses the full amount.
Does spending HSA funds on medical expenses lose the tax benefit the way an FSA forfeiture does?
No — HSA Annual Tax Savings applies to your entire contribution regardless of whether that money is later spent on qualified medical expenses or left invested to grow, since the tax advantage comes from the contribution itself being pre-tax. An FSA only risks losing the tax-advantaged status of the unspent portion specifically, through forfeiture, not the tax savings already realized on the whole contribution.
How much does the HSA Investment Return assumption matter over a longer projection?
It compounds annually on whatever balance accumulates, so its effect grows substantially the longer Years to Project runs — a modest rate difference produces a small gap after just a few years but a much larger one over one or two decades. Someone projecting an HSA balance for retirement decades away should treat the investment return assumption as one of the most consequential inputs in the whole comparison.
