HSA Balance Projector
Simple year-by-year HSA projection with contributions, reimbursements, and growth.
About this calculator
This calculator runs a year-by-year loop: each year it adds your Annual contribution, subtracts your Annual withdrawals, then applies Investment return % growth to whatever remains, floored at zero so the balance can never go negative even if withdrawals exceed contributions and growth combined. Because that compounding repeats once per year for Years, extending the projection horizon compounds every dollar already in the account for one more cycle, not just adding a flat extra year of contributions -- but at this calculator's defaults, a same-percentage change to Annual contribution actually moves Ending balance by slightly more than the equivalent change to Years does, since a bigger yearly contribution compounds at full strength for every single year of the projection, while stretching the horizon only adds a handful of extra compounding cycles on top of a balance that's still dominated by the contributions already made.
Total contributions and Total withdrawals are simple totals (Annual contribution times Years, and Annual withdrawals times Years) and are completely unaffected by Starting balance or Investment return % -- those two only affect Ending balance, not the contribution/withdrawal totals reported alongside it. This is a simplified, single-rate projection: it doesn't model contribution limit changes, employer contribution caps, tax treatment, or year-to-year return variability, so treat it as a rough planning illustration rather than a financial projection you'd rely on for tax or investment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which matters more for my ending balance: the projection period or my contribution amount?
Annual contribution, at this calculator's defaults. Ending balance compounds once per year -- each year's leftover balance (after contributions and withdrawals) earns Investment return % growth, and that growth then compounds again the following year. It's tempting to assume a longer horizon always wins because it adds more compounding cycles, but a bigger Annual contribution compounds at full strength in every one of those cycles, while extending Years only adds a handful of additional cycles to a balance already built mostly from contributions made in earlier years. Which one actually moves the number more depends on your specific inputs, but contribution amount is the stronger lever near the defaults.
Does my starting balance affect Total contributions or Total withdrawals?
No -- Total contributions is simply Annual contribution times Years, and Total withdrawals is Annual withdrawals times Years. Starting balance only affects Ending balance (it's the amount that starts compounding in year one); it has no role in either of the two total figures.
Does my investment return percentage affect Total contributions?
No -- Total contributions and Total withdrawals are pure totals of your entered annual amounts multiplied by the number of years; they don't involve any growth calculation at all. Investment return % only compounds the running balance to produce Ending balance, leaving the two total figures unchanged.
Can my HSA balance go negative in this projection?
No -- the balance is floored at zero after every year's calculation, so if withdrawals ever exceed your contributions plus investment growth in a given year, the projection shows zero for that year rather than a negative balance, and continues from zero the following year.
