How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Radiographic Length (mm) from the preoperative periapical radiograph.
  2. Input the Apex Locator Reading (mm) at the 0.0 or 0.5 apex locator zone.
  3. Select the Initial File Size (ISO) and Canal Curvature type.
  4. Review the Deviation (mm) between radiographic and electronic readings.
  5. Use Recommended Working Length (mm) and Adjusted Accuracy Score to set your length before shaping.

How the result changes with Radiographic length (mm)

Radiographic length (mm)Deviation (mm)
812.5
164.5
254.5
3211.5

What each input means

Radiographic length (mm)
Tooth length measured on periapical radiograph.
Apex locator reading (mm)
Electronic length reading at the 'APEX' mark on the device.
Initial file size (ISO)
ISO size of the file used for the reading (e.g. 10, 15, 20).
Canal curvature (1-4)
1 = straight, 2 = moderate curve, 3 = severe curve, 4 = S-curve.

What each result means

Deviation (mm)
Absolute difference between radiographic and electronic measurements.
Adjusted accuracy score
Accuracy score (0-100) adjusted for canal curvature.
Recommended working length (mm)
Suggested working length with safety margin subtracted.
Tip position vs apex (mm)
Positive = short of apex, negative = beyond apex.
Calibration status (1-3)
1 = accurate, 2 = acceptable, 3 = needs recalibration.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Radiographic length (mm) = 21, Apex locator reading (mm) = 20.5, Initial file size (ISO) = 15, Canal curvature (1-4) = 1 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Deviation
    Deviation
    0.5 = 0.5
  3. Calculate Adjusted accuracy score
    Adjusted accuracy score
    100 = 100
  4. Calculate Recommended working length
    Recommended working length
    19.5 = 19.5
