Contact Lens Annual Cost Calculator

Calculate the total annual cost of wearing contact lenses including lenses, solution, and eye exams.

About this calculator

This calculator adds up the three recurring cost categories of contact lens wear over a year: lenses themselves (box cost times boxes purchased per year), care solution (bottle cost times bottles used per year, zero for daily disposables that need no solution), and the annual fitting/follow-up exam (exam cost times exams per year, typically one). Each category is a simple price-times-quantity product with no discounts, tiers, or bundling modeled, so the total scales linearly with every input. Of the three, lens cost tends to swing the total the most in practice, because box price varies widely by lens type (roughly $20-$180+ per box depending on whether lenses are standard soft, toric for astigmatism, multifocal, or a specialty design) and because most wearers buy several boxes a year, while solution and exam costs occupy much narrower price ranges.

The Monthly Average simply divides the annual total by 12 for budgeting purposes -- it is not a separate calculation. This tool does not account for insurance vision benefits, FSA/HSA reimbursement, loyalty rebate programs, or online retailer discounts, all of which can meaningfully lower the real out-of-pocket cost below the sticker-price total calculated here.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Cost Per Box of Lenses (check your most recent receipt or online retailer).
  2. Enter Boxes Per Year for both eyes combined — daily disposables typically require roughly 8 boxes per year combined with common 90-lens boxes, or up to roughly 24 with 30-lens boxes.
  3. Enter Solution Cost Per Bottle and Bottles Per Year (enter 0 for daily disposables that need no solution).
  4. Enter your Eye Exam Cost and number of Exams Per Year (typically 1 annual contact lens fitting).
  5. Review the breakdown of Annual Lens Cost, Annual Solution Cost, and Annual Exam Cost, plus your Total Annual Cost and Monthly Average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does lens cost usually matter more to the total than solution or exam cost?

Box price varies enormously by lens type -- standard soft lenses can run under $20 a box while specialty toric, multifocal, or extended-wear designs can exceed $80-$180 -- and most wearers buy several boxes a year, so that single input has the widest realistic price range of the three cost categories. Solution and exam costs, by comparison, sit in much narrower typical bands.

How should I estimate Boxes Per Year for daily disposables versus monthly lenses?

Boxes Per Year is a combined figure for both eyes, not per eye. Daily wear means about 730 lenses a year total across both eyes, so with common 90-lens boxes that works out to roughly 8 boxes per year combined (this calculator's default); with smaller 30-lens boxes it takes roughly 24 boxes per year combined instead. Monthly or biweekly lenses need far fewer boxes since each lens is worn repeatedly. Check your prescription's replacement schedule and box size, since a "box" means something different for each lens modality, and remember to count both eyes together, not separately.

Why would I enter $0 for Solution Cost Per Bottle?

Daily disposable lenses are thrown away after each use and never require cleaning or storage solution, so wearers of daily disposables should enter $0 (or set Solution Bottles Per Year to 0) to avoid overstating their annual cost. Monthly and biweekly lens wearers typically do need ongoing solution and should enter their real cost.

Does this calculator account for vision insurance discounts?

No -- it totals the sticker-price cost of lenses, solution, and exams exactly as entered, with no adjustment for vision insurance allowances, FSA/HSA reimbursement, manufacturer rebates, or online retailer discounts. Those can meaningfully lower real out-of-pocket spending below the total shown here.
