How to Use This Calculator
- Score Heartburn and Regurgitation frequency (days/week, 0–3 scale).
- Score Sleep Disturbance, OTC Medication Use, Epigastric Pain, and Nausea (each 0–3).
- Review the GERD-Q Score on a 0–18 scale and the Severity classification.
- Check Diagnosis Likelihood — a score of 8 or higher suggests probable GERD.
- Use Daily Life Impact Score to quantify symptom burden for clinical documentation.
What each input means
- Heartburn Frequency
- Days with heartburn in the past week.
- Regurgitation Frequency
- Days with acid or food coming back up in the past week.
- Sleep Disturbance
- Nights of sleep disturbed by heartburn/regurgitation.
- OTC Medication Use
- Days taking over-the-counter meds for heartburn.
- Epigastric Pain
- Central upper abdominal pain frequency. Higher values suggest non-GERD causes (reverse-scored).
- Nausea
- Nausea frequency. Higher values suggest non-GERD causes (reverse-scored).
What each result means
- GERD-Q Score (0–18)
- Total GERD-Q score. ≥8 suggests GERD diagnosis.
- Severity (0–3)
- 0 = minimal, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate, 3 = severe.
- GERD Likely (0=No, 1=Yes)
- Score ≥8 suggests GERD diagnosis with ~65% sensitivity.
- Daily Life Impact Score
- Sleep disturbance + OTC use. ≥3 indicates significant impact.
- Significant Impact (0/1)
- 1 = impact score ≥3, suggesting need for daily PPI therapy.
- Positive Symptom Score
- Sum of heartburn, regurgitation, sleep, and OTC medication scores.
- Treatment Level (0–3)
- 0 = lifestyle, 1 = lifestyle + antacids, 2 = daily PPI, 3 = PPI + specialist referral.
