Invisalign vs Braces Cost Calculator
Compare total costs of metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign including hidden fees, insurance, and payment plans.
About this calculator
Orthodontic quotes rarely make the full cost of ownership obvious up front, because they usually bundle the headline treatment fee with services that are easy to overlook when comparing options: office visits, emergency or repair visits, post-treatment retainers, and ongoing supplies. This calculator estimates all four for metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign side by side, starting from published US treatment-fee ranges (roughly $3,000-$7,000 for metal, $4,000-$8,000 for ceramic and Invisalign) that scale with case complexity and a geographic cost multiplier. It then adds emergency/repair visits at a higher rate for braces than for aligners, since a bracket or wire is considerably more likely to break or poke than a set of removable aligner trays; retainer costs after treatment ends (Invisalign cases commonly move to Vivera retainers, which run somewhat higher than a typical Hawley or Essix retainer); and ongoing supply costs like wax, orthodontic-specific toothbrushes, or aligner cleaning crystals and cases.
The Ceramic Premium and Invisalign Premium figures show the extra amount either option costs over metal braces after insurance and before any payment-plan financing, and the monthly payment figures divide that after-insurance total evenly across the entered payment-plan length. These are estimates built from typical published cost ranges, not a quote -- every practice sets its own fees, and actual insurance reimbursement depends on the specific plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do braces have higher estimated emergency visit costs than Invisalign?
Fixed brackets and wires are mechanical components bonded to the teeth that can debond, break, or poke the cheek, each of which typically needs an unscheduled office visit to fix -- this calculator estimates roughly one to two such visits per year of treatment for metal braces, more for ceramic brackets (which are more brittle than metal), and considerably fewer for Invisalign, since a removable aligner tray has no wire or bracket to break in the same way.
Why does Invisalign typically carry higher retainer and supply costs after treatment?
Invisalign cases commonly transition to Vivera retainers, a proprietary clear retainer system that generally costs more than a traditional Hawley or Essix retainer used after braces, and ongoing aligner-specific supplies (cleaning crystals, cases, occasional replacement trays) tend to run higher than the wax and specialty toothbrushes used with brackets -- both are modeled in this calculator's supply cost estimate.
How does a higher geographic cost factor change the total treatment cost?
The geographic cost factor scales the base treatment fee for all three options directly -- entering a factor above 1.0 (for a higher cost-of-living area like a major metro) raises every option's fee proportionally, while a factor below 1.0 lowers it, so the dollar gap between metal braces and the other two options widens in expensive markets and narrows in lower-cost ones. Only the base treatment fee scales with this factor -- emergency visits, retainers, supplies, and the insurance benefit are flat dollar amounts regardless of geography -- so the percentage difference between options is not perfectly constant across cost multipliers, even though the fee-only ratio between options stays fixed.
Does spreading payments over more months change the total amount paid?
No -- in this calculator, the payment plan simply divides the same after-insurance total evenly across the number of months entered, so a longer plan lowers the monthly payment but does not itself add interest or fees to the total. A real financing or in-house payment plan may add interest, which this calculator does not model separately from the entered treatment cost.
