Fire Egress Calculator
Calculate exit width, number of exits, and travel distance based on occupant load per IBC.
Inputs
Occupant load = floor area ÷ load factor (ft²/person)
Assembly: 7–15 ft²/person; Business: 100 ft²/person; Educational: 20 ft²/person
≥500 occupants on any floor: minimum 3 exits; ≥1,000: minimum 4 exits per IBC §1006.3
Sprinklered travel distance bonus: +50 ft for most occupancies per IBC Table 1017.2
Results

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Floor Area (sq ft), Occupancy Type, and Number of Floors.
- Set Sprinkler System.
- Review Occupant Load and Minimum Exits Required.
- Use Total Stair Width (inches) and Total Level Exit Width (inches) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Floor Area (sq ft)
| Floor Area (sq ft) | Occupant Load | Minimum Exits Required |
|---|---|---|
| 50,090 | 501 | 3 |
| 175,065 | 1,751 | 4 |
| 325,035 | 3,251 | 4 |
| 450,010 | 4,501 | 4 |
What each input means
- Floor Area (sq ft)
- Total floor area of the space. IBC Table 1004.5 and NFPA 101 Table 7.3.1.2 define occupant load factors by occupancy type.
- Occupancy Type
- IBC occupancy classification per Chapter 3. 1=Assembly (7-15 ft²/person), 2=Business (100 ft²/person), 3=Educational (20 ft²/person), 4=Mercantile (60 ft²/person), 5=Industrial (100 ft²/person).
- Number of Floors
- Total number of stories in the building. IBC §1006 requires additional exits for buildings over certain occupant loads or heights.
- Sprinkler System
- NFPA 13 sprinkler system. IBC §1017 allows increased travel distance in sprinklered buildings: 250 ft for Business vs. 200 ft unsprinklered.
