Decathlon Score Calculator

Point scoring from IAAF decathlon tables.

About this calculator

Decathlon scoring doesn't compare raw times and distances directly — it converts every one of the ten events into points using the official IAAF/World Athletics tables (the 2001 edition, still current), so a 100 m sprint and a javelin throw can be summed on the same scale. This calculator implements the exact formula those tables encode: for track events (100 m, 400 m, 110 m hurdles, 1500 m), where a lower number is better, points = A × (B − performance)^C; for field events (long jump, shot put, high jump, discus, pole vault, javelin), where a higher number is better, points = A × (performance − B)^C. Each event has its own published A, B, and C constants calibrated to reward marginal improvements differently — sprint times near world-record pace earn disproportionately more points per tenth of a second than pedestrian ones.

Every event score is floored to a whole number, matching how official competition scoring works, and the total across all ten events is your decathlon score. The calculator also splits the total into Day 1 (100 m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 m) and Day 2 (110 m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500 m) subtotals, the traditional competition-day grouping, and grades your total against benchmark thresholds from high-school varsity up through Olympic medal contention. One easy-to-miss detail: while you enter jump and vault marks in metres, the underlying IAAF tables for long jump, high jump, and pole vault are calibrated in centimetres, so the calculator converts those three internally before scoring — shot put, discus, and javelin distances are scored directly in metres.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter 100 m time, Long jump distance, and Shot put distance.
  2. Set High jump height, 400 m time, and 110 m hurdles time.
  3. Adjust Discus distance, Pole vault height as needed.
  4. Review the Total Points result.
  5. Use Day 1 Points and Day 2 Points to inform your decision.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    100 m time = 11.5, Long jump distance = 6.5, Shot put distance = 12, High jump height = 1.85 = 10 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total Points
    Total Points
    6824 = 6824
  3. Calculate Day 1 Points
    Day 1 Points = s100 + sLJ + sSP + sHJ + s400
    3451 = 3451
  4. Calculate Day 2 Points
    Day 2 Points = s110H + sDT + sPV + sJT + s1500
    3373 = 3373

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a 100 m sprint use a different formula than a discus throw?

Track events reward being fast — lower is better — so the formula is points = A × (B − performance)^C, where B acts as a cutoff performance beyond which you'd score zero. Field events reward going far or high, so it flips to points = A × (performance − B)^C. Each event's A, B, and C constants are published in the IAAF Scoring Tables for Combined Events (2001 edition, still the current reference) and are calibrated independently per event, so raw point totals from different events aren't derived from a shared unit — only the resulting points are directly comparable.

Why do jump and vault events seem to score differently than throws even though I enter everything in metres?

The long jump, high jump, and pole vault tables are published by IAAF in centimetres, so this calculator multiplies your metre entries by 100 internally before scoring those three events. Shot put, discus, and javelin distances are scored directly in the metres you enter, with no conversion — only the three jump/vault events get this internal unit adjustment.

Why isn't my total exactly what I'd expect from the raw formula math?

Each individual event's point value is floored to a whole number before being added to the total, matching how official competition scoring works — a 799.9-point 100 m becomes 799 points, not 800. Since all ten separately-floored values are summed, the final total can end up a few points lower than a fully precise, unrounded calculation would give.

What's the difference between my Day 1 and Day 2 point totals?

Day 1 sums the traditional first-day events — 100 m, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 m. Day 2 sums 110 m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 m. This mirrors real decathlon competition structure, letting you see whether your total leans on the speed-and-power events of Day 1 or the technical-and-endurance events of Day 2.
