How to Use This Calculator
- Select the knot you plan to tie — Palomar, Improved Clinch, Uni, Blood, or Surgeon's.
- Choose your line material: monofilament, fluorocarbon, or braided line.
- Enter the line's rated test strength in lbs (printed on the spool).
- Read Knot Strength (%) to see how much rated strength the knot retains.
- Check Effective Strength in lbs — this is the actual force at which the knot will fail.
- Use the Recommendation Score to compare knot-line combos and choose the best option for your setup.
What each input means
- Knot Type
- The type of knot you plan to tie. Palomar is the strongest all-around; blood knot is used for joining two lines.
- Line Material
- Line material affects knot grip. Braid is slippery and some knots slip; mono is most forgiving.
- Line Test Rating
- The rated breaking strength of your line in pounds. The knot will reduce this.
What each result means
- Knot Strength
- Percentage of the line's rated strength retained with this knot.
- Effective Strength
- Actual breaking strength of the line at the knot.
- Breaking Point
- The force at which the knot is expected to fail.
- Recommendation Score
- Overall rating considering knot strength, ease of tying, and reliability with your line type.
