How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your fly rod's weight rating (1–12 weight) as printed on the rod blank near the grip.
  2. Select your target species: trout, bass, salmon, or saltwater — larger species require heavier lines.
  3. Input your typical casting distance in feet to account for load and turnover requirements.
  4. Choose the expected wind condition: calm, moderate, or heavy.
  5. Read Recommended Line Weight — this is the ideal fly line to pair with your rod and conditions.
  6. Note Leader Length (ft) and Tippet Size (X rating) for a complete, balanced leader system.

What each input means

Rod Weight
The weight rating of your fly rod (1-12). A 5-weight is the most versatile freshwater rod.
Target Species
The species you intend to target. Larger species require heavier line weights.
Casting Distance
Your typical casting distance in feet. Longer casts benefit from matched or slightly heavier line.
Wind Condition
Expected wind conditions. Heavier line cuts through wind better but sacrifices delicacy.

What each result means

Recommended Line Weight
The optimal fly line weight for your setup and conditions.
Leader Length
Recommended tapered leader length. Longer leaders are stealthier; shorter leaders turn over in wind.
Tippet Size (X)
Recommended tippet diameter rating. Higher X numbers mean thinner, more delicate tippet.
Overall Balance Rating
How well your rod, line, and conditions match for optimal casting performance.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Rod Weight = 5, Target Species = 0, Casting Distance = 40, Wind Condition = 0 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Recommended Line Weight
    Recommended Line Weight
    5 = 5
  3. Calculate Leader Length
    Leader Length
    8.5 = 8.5
  4. Calculate Tippet Size
    Tippet Size
    5 = 5
