Trolling Speed Calculator
Find the optimal trolling speed for your target species and lure type, adjusted for water temperature and conditions.

Optimal Speed
1.8 mph
How to Use This Calculator
- Select the species you are targeting: walleye, salmon, trout, musky, or striped bass.
- Choose your lure type — crankbaits need faster speeds for action; live bait works slower.
- Enter the current water temperature in °F — cold water below 50°F requires significantly slower presentations.
- Read Optimal Speed in mph and set your GPS or speed indicator accordingly.
- Use the Min/Max Speed range to experiment if fish are not responding at the optimal speed.
- Check Estimated Lure Depth in ft to target the depth zone where fish are holding.
What each input means
- Target Species
- Each species has preferred trolling speeds. Walleye prefer slow; musky prefer faster presentations.
- Lure Type
- Crankbaits need faster speeds for action; live bait works best at slow speeds.
- Water Temperature
- Surface water temperature in Fahrenheit. Fish metabolism and activity change dramatically with temperature.
What each result means
- Optimal Speed
- The ideal trolling speed for your species, lure, and conditions.
- Minimum Speed
- Lower bound of the effective speed range.
- Maximum Speed
- Upper bound of the effective speed range.
- Estimated Lure Depth
- Approximate running depth of your lure at the recommended speed.
- Temperature Adjustment
- Speed adjustment applied due to water temperature. Negative means slower.
