Attraction Capacity Calculator
Calculate maximum daily visitors from throughput rate, operating hours, and safety capacity limits.
About this calculator
This calculator finds the maximum number of visitors an attraction can serve in a day by comparing two independent constraints and taking the lower one. Capacity-Limited Max (Turnover) is Safety Capacity (the fire-code/on-site limit) times a Turnover Rate (Operating Hours divided by Avg Visit Duration -- how many times the site fully turns over its crowd per day). Throughput-Limited Max (Entry Gate) is simply Hourly Throughput times Operating Hours -- how many people the ticket gate or entrance can physically process. Max Daily Visitors is whichever of the two is smaller.
At the default inputs, the on-site capacity/turnover constraint is the binding one: raising Operating Hours or Safety Capacity, or lowering Avg Visit Duration, all raise Max Daily Visitors, while Hourly Throughput currently has no effect at all, because the entry gate isn't the bottleneck yet -- lower Hourly Throughput enough and it would become the binding constraint instead, at which point the relationship flips. Max Simultaneous is a direct pass-through of Safety Capacity -- none of the other three inputs affect it, since it's a fixed on-site headcount limit, not a calculated flow rate. Peak Hour Estimate, the 50%/75% capacity-day figures, and Annual Capacity are all fixed percentages or multiples of Max Daily Visitors, so they inherit whichever constraint is currently binding it.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the Hourly Throughput (visitors processed per hour) and Operating Hours per day.
- Set the Average Visit Duration in hours — longer visits reduce simultaneous capacity.
- Enter the Safety Capacity (maximum simultaneous visitors allowed).
- Review Max Daily Visitors, Max Simultaneous, Turnover Rate, and Peak Hour Estimate.
- Use 75% Capacity Day as a practical operational target for comfortable visitor experience.
How the result changes with Avg Visit Duration
| Avg Visit Duration | Max Daily Visitors |
|---|---|
| 1.5 | 2,000 |
| 2.25 | 2,000 |
| 4.5 | 1,111 |
| 7.5 | 667 |
What each input means
- Hourly Throughput
- Maximum visitors that can enter per hour (ticketing/gate capacity).
- Operating Hours
- Hours open per day.
- Avg Visit Duration
- Average time a visitor spends at the attraction.
- Safety Capacity
- Maximum people allowed on-site simultaneously (fire code / safety).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Hourly Throughput have no effect on Max Daily Visitors right now?
Max Daily Visitors is the lower of two independent limits: a capacity/turnover limit (Safety Capacity times how many times the site turns over per day) and a throughput limit (Hourly Throughput times Operating Hours). At the default inputs, the capacity/turnover limit is smaller, so it's the one actually binding -- Hourly Throughput would only start moving Max Daily Visitors once it dropped low enough to become the tighter of the two constraints.
What does Turnover Rate measure?
Turnover Rate is Operating Hours divided by Avg Visit Duration -- how many times, on average, the entire on-site crowd fully cycles out and gets replaced by new visitors over the course of a day. A longer Avg Visit Duration lowers Turnover Rate, since each visitor occupies a capacity slot longer, while more Operating Hours raises it by giving more cycles to work with.
Why does Max Simultaneous only depend on Safety Capacity?
Max Simultaneous is a direct pass-through of the Safety Capacity input -- it's a fixed on-site headcount ceiling set by fire code or site safety rules, not something calculated from throughput, hours, or visit duration, so none of those three inputs move it at all.
How is Throughput-Limited Max calculated?
Throughput-Limited Max (Entry Gate) is simply Hourly Throughput times Operating Hours -- the total number of people your ticketing or entrance gate can physically process across the whole operating day, independent of Safety Capacity or how long visitors stay.
What do the 50% and 75% Capacity Day figures represent?
50% Capacity Day and 75% Capacity Day are Max Daily Visitors scaled down to half and three-quarters of its value -- practical, more comfortable operational targets below the theoretical maximum, useful for staffing and guest-experience planning rather than the absolute daily ceiling.
