RV Winterization Calculator

Calculate how much RV antifreeze you need to winterize your plumbing system, plus DIY time and professional service cost estimates.

About this calculator

This calculator adds up the antifreeze needed to protect an RV's plumbing from freezing, then estimates the time and cost to do the job yourself or hire it out. Antifreeze Needed starts from RV Length (plumbing line volume), Number of Faucets / Fixtures (each trap needs its own dose), a fixed water heater bypass allowance, and flat add-ons for a Washer/Dryer or Ice Maker if installed, then applies a 20% safety margin and rounds up to the next whole gallon -- antifreeze is sold and poured by the gallon, so a fractional result isn't purchasable. That rounding means a small change to RV Length or Number of Faucets can leave Antifreeze Needed unchanged if it doesn't push the pre-rounding total across the next whole-gallon line; both still add real gallons to the underlying total, the rounding just doesn't always show it at any single input tweak. Water Heater Size is informational only -- during winterization the heater is bypassed rather than filled with antifreeze, so its value passes straight through to a reference output and never changes any cost or antifreeze figure.

DIY Time responds most to whether a Washer/Dryer is installed (a flat 15-minute addition) rather than to Number of Faucets, whose per-fixture time is smaller at the default fixture count. Professional Service Cost only rises once Number of Faucets exceeds four, adding $10 per fixture beyond that baseline. This is a planning estimate -- actual antifreeze needs vary with plumbing layout, fixture type, and how thoroughly lines are blown out with compressed air first.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your RV length and number of faucets/fixtures.
  2. Set water heater size (gallons) and indicate if washer/dryer or ice maker is installed.
  3. Review the amount of RV antifreeze needed and the step-by-step winterization checklist.
  4. Check estimated time to complete winterization and recommended annual maintenance tasks.
  5. Winterize before the first freeze -- even one night of freezing temperatures can crack pipes and fittings.

What each input means

RV Length
Overall length of your RV. Longer RVs have more plumbing lines to fill.
Number of Faucets / Fixtures
Count every faucet, shower head, toilet, and outdoor shower. Each needs antifreeze in its trap.
Water Heater Size
Water heater tank size. You will bypass this during winterization, not fill it with antifreeze.
Washer/Dryer Installed
Washer plumbing needs extra antifreeze.
Ice Maker Installed
Ice maker water line needs antifreeze protection.

What each result means

Antifreeze Needed
Gallons of RV-safe antifreeze required, including a 20% safety margin.
Antifreeze Cost
Estimated cost at ~$5 per gallon of RV antifreeze.
DIY Time Estimate
Approximate time to winterize the RV yourself.
Professional Service Cost
Estimated cost to have a dealer or mobile tech winterize your RV.
Total Steps
Number of discrete winterization steps for your setup.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    RV Length = 28, Number of Faucets / Fixtures = 5, Water Heater Size = 6, Washer/Dryer Installed = 0 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Antifreeze Needed
    Antifreeze Needed
    6 = 6
  3. Calculate Antifreeze Cost
    Antifreeze Cost
    30 = 30
  4. Calculate DIY Time Estimate

Frequently Asked Questions

Why might Antifreeze Needed stay the same after a small change to RV Length or Number of Faucets?

Antifreeze Needed rounds its pre-safety-margin total up to the next whole gallon, since antifreeze is bought and poured by the gallon. RV Length and Number of Faucets both genuinely add to that underlying total, but a modest change only shows up in the rounded result once it's large enough to push the total across the next whole-gallon line.

Does Water Heater Size change how much antifreeze is needed?

No. The water heater is bypassed during winterization rather than filled with antifreeze, so Water Heater Size doesn't enter the antifreeze, cost, time, or step-count calculations at all -- it's shown back as a reference figure (Heater (gal)) only.

Why does installing a Washer/Dryer affect DIY Time more than Number of Faucets does?

A Washer/Dryer adds a flat 15 minutes to DIY Time for its extra plumbing, while each additional faucet or fixture only adds about 10 minutes -- and at the default five fixtures, that per-fixture time change is smaller than the Washer/Dryer's one-time addition, giving the Washer/Dryer toggle the larger effect.

When does Professional Service Cost increase with Number of Faucets?

Professional Service Cost starts at a flat $125 base and only rises once Number of Faucets / Fixtures exceeds four, adding $10 for each fixture beyond that baseline. RV Length and Water Heater Size have no effect on this figure at all -- it's driven entirely by fixture count above the four-fixture threshold.
