This calculator estimates driving/travel time from Distance and Average Speed, then adds rest-stop time on top using Break Duration and Breaks Per Hour. Travel Time is simply Distance divided by Average Speed, shown as hours and minutes; Total Time (with breaks) adds Total Break Time on top of that base figure. Total Break Time is the whole number of breaks taken -- Travel Time in hours times Breaks Per Hour, rounded DOWN to a whole break -- multiplied by Break Duration: Break Duration is the input with the clearest, most direct effect on Total Break Time, since raising it always raises Total Break Time in direct proportion whenever at least one break is taken. Distance, Average Speed, and Breaks Per Hour also drive Total Break Time, but only indirectly, through that whole-break rounding: because breaks are counted as a whole number, a small change to any of these three inputs often changes Total Break Time by nothing at all, until it pushes the running break count across the next whole number, at which point Total Break Time jumps by a full Break Duration at once. Unit System is a label-only setting in this version -- switching it does not convert Distance or Average Speed between metric and imperial, so enter your numbers already in the units you intend to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does raising Break Duration always raise Total Break Time, but raising Distance sometimes doesn't?

Break Duration multiplies directly into Total Break Time (Total Break Time = whole breaks taken x Break Duration), so any increase always raises the total whenever at least one break is scheduled. Distance instead only changes the whole number of breaks taken -- a small increase in Distance often leaves that whole number unchanged, so Total Break Time stays flat until Distance is large enough to add one more full break.

How is the number of breaks calculated?

The engine multiplies your Travel Time in hours by Breaks Per Hour and rounds the result down to a whole number -- so with the default 3-hour trip and 0.5 breaks per hour, 3 x 0.5 = 1.5 rounds down to exactly 1 break, not 1.5. That whole-number rounding is why small tweaks to Distance, Average Speed, or Breaks Per Hour don't always change your Total Break Time.

Does switching Unit System convert my Distance and Speed?

No -- Unit System is a label-only selector in this version; it does not convert the numbers you've entered between kilometers/km/h and miles/mph. Enter Distance and Average Speed already in whichever unit system you intend, since the calculation uses the raw numbers as typed.

Why doesn't Total Time show a smooth increase as I raise Average Speed?

Total Time combines the base Travel Time (which does fall smoothly as Average Speed rises) with Total Break Time, which only changes in whole-break jumps as described above -- so overall Total Time falls in a mostly-smooth but occasionally-stepped pattern as Average Speed increases, rather than a perfectly linear line.
