Length Converter

Convert between all length and distance units — inches, feet, yards, miles, millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers.

Metres are the pivot: your entry is multiplied into metres by its own unit's factor and then divided back out into every other column. All four imperial factors here are exact rather than measured, which is a consequence of the 1959 international yard and pound agreement — the inch was defined as precisely 0.0254 m, making the foot 0.3048 m, the yard 0.9144 m and the mile 1609.344 m. The Feet & Inches column is the one that behaves differently: it takes the whole number of feet, multiplies the leftover fraction by twelve and rounds that remainder to two decimals, so it reads as a carpenter would call it rather than as a decimal. Rounding is not uniform across the table. Millimetres are held to two decimals, centimetres to three, miles and kilometres to five, and the rest to four, so a very short distance can display as a flat zero in the miles column while still showing digits in millimetres. Note the omissions: no nautical mile, no US survey foot, and nothing at astronomical or microscopic scale — no light-years, microns or angstroms. This is strictly one-dimensional, so it will not square or cube anything for you into area or volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Feet & Inches row show that the Feet row does not?

It splits the decimal apart the way a tape measure reads. The whole feet stay as they are, and the fractional part is multiplied by twelve and rounded to two decimals, so 1.8288 metres arrives as 6 feet 0 inches instead of 6.0000.

Are these conversion factors approximate?

The imperial ones are exact by international definition, not measurement. Since 1959 the inch has been fixed at 0.0254 metres, which makes the foot, yard and mile exact multiples of it as well, so no error is introduced by the factor itself.

Why does a small distance sometimes show 0 miles?

Each column carries its own rounding, and miles are held to five decimal places. Anything shorter than about eight millimetres therefore rounds away to zero in that column even though the millimetre and centimetre columns still show real digits.

Can I convert land survey measurements with this?

Not safely for older US deeds. Those were often recorded in the US survey foot, which is larger than the international foot by about two parts per million, and only the international definition is implemented here. Over a mile that gap is roughly three millimetres.

Does it handle nautical distance?

No nautical mile is offered in either the input list or the output table. If you need one, the international nautical mile is exactly 1852 metres, so you can enter your distance in metres and divide the result yourself.
