Weight Converter

Convert between weight and mass units — ounces, pounds, stone, kilograms, grams, and tons.

Grams are the internal pivot. Your entry is scaled into grams using its own unit's factor — 28.3495 for the avoirdupois ounce, 453.592 for the pound, 6350.29 for the stone, 907,185 for the US ton and a flat million for the metric tonne — and then divided back out across seven columns. The input list and the output table are deliberately not symmetrical: US Tons appears among the units you can enter but has no column of its own, so a tonnage figure comes back expressed in metric tonnes and kilograms rather than in the short ton you started from. Watch which unit the answer you need actually lives in. The default entry of 150 pounds lands on 68.0388 kilograms and 10.7143 stone, that last one being the reason the column exists at all — British and Irish body weight is quoted nowhere else. Precious metals are the main trap. The ounce here is the avoirdupois grocery ounce, not the troy ounce used for gold and silver, and no troy unit or pennyweight is offered. There is also no gravity anywhere in the arithmetic, so nothing yields newtons or pounds-force; every figure describes quantity of matter, unchanged by where you weigh it.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Value = 150, From Unit = 2 = 2 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Ounces
    Ounces = round((grams / 28.3495) * 10000) / 10000
    2400 = 2400
  3. Calculate Pounds
    Pounds = round((grams / 453.592) * 10000) / 10000
    150 = 150

Frequently Asked Questions

I selected US Tons — why can I not see a US ton result?

That unit is accepted on the way in but has no matching column on the way out. Your figure is converted through grams and reported in metric tonnes, kilograms and pounds instead, so read the Metric Tons row and remember it is 1000 kg rather than 907.185 kg.

Can I use the Ounces row to value gold?

You should not. Bullion trades in troy ounces of about 31.103 grams, while this page uses the avoirdupois ounce of 28.3495 grams that applies to food and postage. The gap is near ten percent and no troy unit appears anywhere here.

Is this measuring weight or mass?

Mass, despite the name. No gravitational acceleration is applied at any stage, so there is no newton or pound-force output and no field to enter a local g. The same number would hold on the Moon, where true weight is about a sixth of Earth's.

What is a stone in ordinary units?

Exactly fourteen pounds, or 6.35029 kilograms as this engine stores it. It survives almost entirely as the way body weight is spoken about in Britain and Ireland, which is why the column sits alongside pounds rather than replacing them.
