Torque is a twisting moment — a force applied at some distance from an axis — and this tool rebases one figure across the four units that fastener and drivetrain work actually quotes: newton-metres, foot-pounds, inch-pounds and kilogram-force centimetres. Everything routes through N·m. Whatever you type in the Torque field is multiplied by its unit's factor to reach N·m, then divided back out into the other three columns, so raising the entered torque raises every column together. One foot-pound is 1.3558179483314 N·m, and the inch-pound column is derived as exactly one twelfth of that rather than as a separately rounded constant, so ft·lb and in·lb can never drift apart. A kilogram-force centimetre is 0.0980665 N·m, which is why an older metric wrench marked in kgf·cm reads roughly ten times higher than the same setting expressed in N·m. What it does not account for is bolt preload. A torque spec is only a proxy for clamp load, and the link between the two runs through thread friction, lubrication, plating and washer condition; an oiled thread reaches the same tension at meaningfully lower torque. Nor does it correct for a crow's-foot or extension bar, which changes the effective lever arm, or warn you that N·m and joules share dimensions while describing different quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the inch-pound figure always exactly a twelfth of the foot-pound figure?
Because the engine defines the inch-pound factor as the foot-pound factor divided by twelve, not as an independently rounded constant. Twelve inches make a foot, so the two columns stay consistent right down to the ninth decimal the result is rounded at.
Is a kgf·cm the same as a newton-centimetre?
No. A kilogram-force is the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity, 9.80665 newtons, so one kgf·cm works out at 0.0980665 N·m — nearly ten times a newton-centimetre. Older European and Japanese service manuals quote kgf·cm and kgf·m routinely.
Can this tell me how tight a bolt actually ends up?
Only indirectly. It changes units, not physics. The clamping force a given torque produces depends on thread pitch, friction coefficient, lubrication and surface finish, and those can shift the achieved preload by tens of percent between a dry fastener and an oiled one.
Torque and energy are both newton-metres, so does 50 N·m equal 50 joules?
The units match dimensionally but the quantities do not. Torque is a moment: force acting at right angles through a lever arm. Energy is force acting through a displacement. Convention reserves the joule for energy and the newton-metre for torque precisely to keep the two apart.
