Alone among the universal converters, this one cannot reach its answer by multiplication. Three of its five scales place their zero somewhere different, so every entry is first resolved into Celsius and then rebuilt outward. Two of the five will be unfamiliar. Rankine is an absolute scale using Fahrenheit-sized degrees: its zero sits at absolute zero and water freezes at 491.67 °R, which keeps it in use across American thermodynamics and HVAC work where Fahrenheit intervals are already the habit. Réaumur puts zero at freezing and eighty at boiling, making each of its degrees exactly 1.25 Celsius degrees; it has all but disappeared, surviving mainly in traditional Italian and Swiss cheesemaking where curd temperatures are still spoken about in it. One degree Celsius accordingly emerges as 33.8 °F, 274.15 K, 493.47 °R and 0.8 °Ré, each rounded at six decimals and shown to four. Watch what Kelvin and Rankine do together: both take their zero from the same physical floor, so entering -273.15 °C sends the two of them negative at the same instant. Nothing on this page refuses a temperature below absolute zero, and no warning appears when you cross it. Delisle and Newton, the other historic scales, are not offered. Nor is any thermodynamic content — a temperature is not a quantity of heat, and reaching one from the other needs a mass and a specific heat capacity that this page never asks for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rankine used for?

It is the absolute companion to Fahrenheit, with the same size degree but its zero placed at absolute zero, so water freezes at 491.67 °R. American thermodynamics texts and HVAC calculations use it wherever an absolute temperature is needed but the work is already in Fahrenheit.

Does anyone still use Réaumur?

Barely, and mostly in food traditions. Its scale runs 0 at freezing to 80 at boiling, so a Réaumur degree equals 1.25 Celsius degrees. Italian and Swiss cheesemaking recipes still quote curd temperatures in it, which is the main reason to include the column.

Why do Kelvin and Rankine both go negative together?

Because they share a zero at absolute zero and differ only in the size of their degree. Passing -273.15 °C takes you below that floor, and since nothing here clamps the input, both absolute columns turn negative at exactly the same moment.

How many scales does this handle compared with a basic converter?

Five rather than the usual three. Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin cover ordinary use, and the Rankine and Réaumur columns are what distinguish this page — one for engineering work in imperial units, the other for reading older European sources.

Can I work out how much heat something contains?

No. Temperature and heat are separate quantities, and getting from one to the other requires the mass of the object and its specific heat capacity, neither of which is collected here. A spark and a bathtub can share a temperature and hold wildly different energy.
