Before a single board goes into the ground, a raised bed comes down to one question: how much soil does the box need to hold? Get the volume wrong and you either over-order expensive bagged soil or run a bulk delivery short and end up making a second trip. The math itself is simple geometry, but a few practical wrinkles — how depth is measured, how lumber courses round up, and how bag pricing scales — are easy to miss until you've already bought the wrong amount.

The Formula: Length × Width × Depth

Soil volume for a rectangular bed is just length times width times depth — the same formula that gives you the volume of any box. The only wrinkle is units. Bed length and width are almost always measured in feet, but wall depth is usually specified in inches, since that's how lumber and soil depth are sold and discussed. Before multiplying, depth has to be converted to feet by dividing by 12. Skip that step and the result is off by a factor of 12, which is the single most common soil-calculator error.

Once you have a volume in cubic feet, dividing by 27 converts it to cubic yards — the unit bulk soil is priced and delivered in, since a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 cubic feet.

Choosing a Depth

Most vegetables do well with 12 inches of soil depth, which is why it's the standard default for raised bed planning. Shallow-rooted crops like lettuce and herbs can get by with less, while deep-rooted crops — tomatoes, carrots, potatoes — benefit from 18 inches or more if you're building tall enough walls to support it. A reasonable working range runs from about 6 inches (a minimal raised border) to 36 inches (a full raised planter you don't have to bend over for).

Bed width matters too, independent of depth: keeping a bed to about 4 feet wide or less means you can comfortably reach the center from either side without stepping into the growing area and compacting the soil. Length is far more flexible — 8 feet is the most common single-bed length, mostly because it matches standard lumber sizes, but there's no structural reason a bed can't run longer.

Worked Example: An 8×4 Bed at 12 Inches

Take the most common configuration: an 8 ft long, 4 ft wide bed with 12-inch walls.

  1. Convert depth to feet: 12 in ÷ 12 = 1 ft
  2. Multiply length × width × depth: 8 ft × 4 ft × 1 ft = 32 cubic feet
  3. Convert to cubic yards: 32 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.19 cubic yards

That's the number you'd hand a bulk soil supplier, or use to work out a bagged-soil order. At roughly $45 per cubic yard for bulk delivery — a common regional benchmark, though local pricing varies — that bed works out to about $53 in soil alone before lumber and hardware.

Bags vs. Bulk: The Math Actually Changes the Answer

Garden soil and mixes are sold in two common bag sizes — 1 cubic foot and 2 cubic foot — plus bulk delivery by the cubic yard. The volume you need doesn't change between them, but the cost does, because larger bags cost less per cubic foot of soil in absolute terms but more per bag; a 2 cubic foot bag typically runs about 60% more than two separate 1 cubic foot bags would cost combined, since you're paying for handling convenience, not just soil.

Take a deeper bed as a second example: 6 ft × 3 ft with 18-inch walls.

  1. Convert depth: 18 in ÷ 12 = 1.5 ft
  2. Volume: 6 × 3 × 1.5 = 27 cubic feet — exactly 1 cubic yard
  3. 1 cu ft bags needed: 27 bags, rounded up to whole bags
  4. 2 cu ft bags needed: 14 bags (27 ÷ 2, rounded up)

At $6 per 1 cu ft bag, that's $162 in bags. At roughly 60% more per unit for the 2 cu ft size, the 14-bag option runs closer to $134. Bulk delivery of the same 1 cubic yard at $45/yd is dramatically cheaper than either — the gap between bagged and bulk pricing widens fast as bed volume grows, which is why bulk delivery becomes worth the minimum-order hassle somewhere around a half-yard to a full yard for most suppliers.

Don't Forget: Wall Depth and Soil Depth Aren't Always the Same Number

Here's a detail that trips people up: lumber comes in fixed board heights, and wall construction is built in whole courses (stacked boards), not arbitrary heights. A standard 2×8 board has an actual (not nominal) height of 7.25 inches. To build a 12-inch-deep wall, you need enough courses to reach or exceed 12 inches — one course of 2×8 only gets you 7.25 inches, so it takes two full courses, for an actual built height of 14.5 inches, not exactly 12.

That extra 2.5 inches of wall height is usually harmless — a slightly taller bed than planned — but it's worth knowing about before you order soil to fill it exactly to the rim. If you want the soil to reach the top of the walls rather than stop a couple of inches short, use the actual course height (a multiple of your board's real dimension) rather than your originally requested depth when sizing the soil order for a completely full bed.

The Bottom Line

Raised bed soil volume is straightforward geometry — length × width × depth, with depth converted from inches to feet before you multiply — but the practical decisions sit on top of that number: how deep to build for what you're growing, whether bagged or bulk soil is cheaper at your bed's size, and whether your lumber courses will land exactly on your target depth or round up past it.
