Insecticide Application Rate Calculator

Rate from label and field area.

About this calculator

This calculator converts a product's label rate into exactly what you need to buy and mix for a specific field, working entirely from fluid ounces per acre — if your label is in pints or pounds per acre, convert to oz first. It multiplies the label rate by field acres to get total product needed, then divides by your container size and rounds up to whole containers, since you can't buy a partial jug; that rounding is also why cost-per-acre can come in slightly above the raw math, since you're paying for whatever's left over in the last container. Active ingredient per acre is derived from the label rate and the AI concentration percentage printed on the product (e.g., 41.1% for many chlorpyrifos formulations), converted from ounces to pounds using the standard 16 oz-per-pound factor.

Separately, it multiplies your chosen spray volume (gallons per acre) by field acres to get total spray solution, then divides total product ounces by that figure to tell you how many ounces of product to add per gallon of water in the tank — the number you actually need at the mixing station. A common mixup this calculator avoids: application rate (how much finished spray mix goes on the field) and product concentration in the tank (how much concentrated product goes into each gallon of water) are two different rates, and this tool keeps them separate rather than conflating them. It doesn't check PHI or REI limits — those still need to be verified against the label separately.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the insecticide product and target pest.
  2. Set the label rate in oz or lb per acre.
  3. Input field size in acres and sprayer tank capacity in gallons.
  4. Review total product needed and per-tank amount to load.
  5. Verify PHI (pre-harvest interval) and REI (re-entry interval) before application.

What each input means

Label rate (fl oz/acre)
Recommended application rate from the product label.
AI concentration (%)
Active ingredient percentage shown on the label (e.g., 41.1% for chlorpyrifos).
Field size (acres)
Total area to be treated.
Spray volume (GPA)
Gallons of total spray mix applied per acre.
Cost per container ($)
Price per container/jug of product.
Container size (fl oz)
Volume of each product container (128 oz = 1 gallon).

What each result means

Total product needed (fl oz)
Total fluid ounces of product required for the field.
Containers to purchase
Number of containers needed (rounded up).
AI applied (lb/acre)
Pounds of active ingredient applied per acre.
Total spray mix (gal)
Total gallons of spray solution for the field.
Product per gal spray mix
Ounces of product to add per gallon of water in the tank.
Product cost ($/acre)
Product cost per acre (based on whole containers).

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Label rate (fl oz/acre) = 6, AI concentration (%) = 41.1, Field size (acres) = 80, Spray volume (GPA) = 15 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total product needed
    Total product needed = labelRateOzPerAcre * fieldAcres
    480 = 480
  3. Calculate Containers to purchase
    Containers to purchase
    4 = 4
  4. Calculate AI applied
    AI applied = aiPerAcreOz / 16
    0.154 = 0.154
  5. Calculate Total spray mix
    Total spray mix = sprayVolumeGPA * fieldAcres
    1200 = 1200

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the calculator round up to whole containers instead of showing an exact fraction?

You physically can't buy or apply a partial jug of product, so the calculator computes the exact fluid ounces needed (label rate × field acres), divides by container size, and rounds up with Math.ceil. This means your actual cost-per-acre will usually be slightly higher than the raw rate-times-acres math would suggest, since any leftover product in the last container is still purchased.

What's the difference between 'AI applied per acre' and 'product per gallon of spray mix'?

AI applied per acre (lb/acre) is the active ingredient dose the field actually receives — label rate multiplied by the AI concentration percentage, then converted from ounces to pounds. Product per gallon is a mixing instruction: total product ounces divided by total spray gallons, telling you how much concentrated product to pour into each gallon of water in the tank. These are two different rates and mixing them up is a common label-reading error.

Does spray volume (GPA) change how much product I need?

No. Total product needed depends only on the label rate and field acres — spray volume never enters that calculation. GPA only determines how much water you're diluting that same fixed amount of product into, which changes the mixing concentration (oz per gallon) but not the total product purchased or applied.

Does this calculator check pre-harvest interval (PHI) or re-entry interval (REI) limits?

No — it only converts label rate into product quantities, costs, and mixing ratios. PHI and REI restrictions vary by product and crop and must still be verified directly against the product label before application.
