EV Home Charging Cost Calculator

Calculate daily, monthly, and annual EV home charging costs. Compare to equivalent gas prices and see the impact on your electric bill.

About this calculator

This calculator converts your driving pattern into an EV charging cost by chaining three ratios together: Daily Miles Driven divided by EV Efficiency gives energy used per day, then dividing by Charging Efficiency inflates that to Daily kWh from Grid -- the amount your utility meter actually registers, which is always MORE than the energy that reaches the battery, since Level 2 charging typically loses roughly 10% to heat in the process. Monthly Cost and Annual Cost then simply multiply Daily kWh from Grid by Electricity Rate and by 30.44 (average days per month) or 365. Equivalent Gas Price is a reverse-engineered breakeven number, not a real gas price: it answers "what would a gallon of gas need to cost for a 30-MPG gasoline car to spend the same total dollars as your EV charging costs" -- the 30 MPG comparison figure is a fixed assumption built into this calculator, not one you can adjust.

Because both sides of that comparison scale with Daily Miles Driven equally, the mileage term cancels out of the equation entirely -- Equivalent Gas Price reduces to a fixed ratio of the other three inputs (30 × Electricity Rate ÷ (EV Efficiency × Charging Efficiency)) and genuinely does not change when you adjust Daily Miles Driven, unlike Monthly Cost and Annual Cost, which do. Monthly Gas Cost is a separate, more literal figure: what the same 30-MPG comparison vehicle would actually cost per month at Gas Price, a real, user-adjustable pump price rather than a hidden constant -- this DOES scale with Daily Miles Driven, and is what drives the Monthly Cost: EV vs Gas chart.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your average Daily Miles Driven.
  2. Set the EV Efficiency in mi/kWh (check your vehicle specs or onboard display).
  3. Enter your home Electricity Rate in $/kWh — find this on your utility bill.
  4. Set Charging Efficiency (%) — Level 2 chargers are typically 90% efficient.
  5. Set Gas Price ($/gal) to your local pump price for an accurate Monthly Gas Cost comparison.
  6. Review Daily kWh from Grid, Monthly Cost, Annual Cost, Equivalent Gas Price, and Monthly Gas Cost for comparison.

What each input means

Daily Miles Driven
Average miles driven per day. Not unit-converted: EV Efficiency below is fixed in mi/kWh, so this stays in miles to match it.
EV Efficiency
Your EV's efficiency rating in miles per kWh.
Electricity Rate
Your utility rate per kWh. Check your bill; consider off-peak EV rates.
Charging Efficiency
Level 2 is ~90% efficient; Level 1 is ~85%. Some energy is lost as heat.
Gas Price
Price per gallon for the 30-MPG comparison vehicle used in Monthly Gas Cost. The U.S. national average was around $4.10/gal in August 2026 (EIA) -- check current local prices and adjust.

What each result means

Daily kWh from Grid
Total kWh drawn from the grid including charging losses.
Monthly Cost
Monthly electricity cost for EV charging.
Annual Cost
Yearly electricity cost for EV charging.
Equivalent Gas Price (per Gallon)
Breakeven gas price at a 30 MPG equivalent -- a per-gallon ratio, independent of Daily Miles Driven.
Monthly kWh Added
Additional kWh on your monthly electricity bill.
Monthly Gas Cost (30 MPG Comparison)
What a 30 MPG comparison vehicle would cost per month at Gas Price, driving the same Daily Miles Driven.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    5 parameters
    Daily Miles Driven = 35, EV Efficiency = 3.5, Electricity Rate = 0.14, Charging Efficiency = 90, Gas Price = 4.1 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Daily kWh from Grid
Daily kWh from Grid = (Daily Miles Driven ÷ EV Efficiency) ÷ Charging Efficiency
    (35 mi ÷ 3.5 mi/kWh) ÷ 90% = 11.11 kWh = 11.11 kWh
  3. Calculate Monthly Cost
Monthly Cost = Daily kWh from Grid × Electricity Rate × 30.44 days
    11.11 kWh × $0.14/kWh × 30.44 = $47.35 = $47.35
  4. Calculate Annual Cost
Annual Cost = Daily kWh from Grid × Electricity Rate × 365 days
    11.11 kWh × $0.14/kWh × 365 = $567.78 = $567.78
  5. Calculate Equivalent Gas Price
Equivalent Gas Price = (30 MPG × Electricity Rate) ÷ (EV Efficiency × Charging Efficiency) -- independent of mileage
    (30 × $0.14) ÷ (3.5 × 90%) = $1.33/gal = $1.33/gal
  6. Calculate Monthly Gas Cost (30 MPG Comparison)
Monthly Gas Cost = (Daily Miles Driven × 30.44 ÷ 30 MPG) × Gas Price
    (35 mi × 30.44 ÷ 30) × $4.1/gal = $145.6 = $145.6

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Equivalent Gas Price a real gas price I should compare to at the pump?

No -- it's a reverse-engineered breakeven figure, not a market gas price. It answers "what would gasoline need to cost per gallon for a 30-MPG car to spend the same total dollars as your EV charging costs?" using a fixed 30 MPG assumption. Use it as a rough yardstick for whether your EV charging cost beats typical gas spending, not as a quote to compare against your local pump price directly. For an actual dollar comparison at a real pump price, use Monthly Gas Cost and the Gas Price input instead.

Can I change the 30 MPG comparison vehicle used for Equivalent Gas Price?

No, the 30 MPG comparison figure is fixed inside this calculator's formula and isn't one of the adjustable inputs. If your actual gas-vehicle comparison gets meaningfully better or worse mileage than 30 MPG, treat Equivalent Gas Price as directionally useful but scale it accordingly for a more personalized comparison.

Why doesn't Equivalent Gas Price change when I adjust Daily Miles Driven?

Because it's a per-gallon breakeven ratio, not an absolute dollar comparison. Both your EV charging cost and the equivalent gas cost scale by the same factor when you drive more or fewer miles, so Daily Miles Driven cancels out of the equation completely -- Equivalent Gas Price reduces to (30 MPG × Electricity Rate) ÷ (EV Efficiency × Charging Efficiency). Monthly Cost, Annual Cost, and Monthly Gas Cost all DO change with mileage; Equivalent Gas Price is a fixed exchange rate between the two fuel costs, not a total.

Why is Daily kWh from Grid larger than the energy my EV's trip computer shows it used?

Because Daily kWh from Grid includes charging losses that your car's trip computer doesn't see -- it only measures energy that reached the battery. This calculator divides the energy actually used by Charging Efficiency (typically around 90% for Level 2 home charging) to estimate the larger amount your utility meter registers, since some energy is always lost as heat during the AC-to-DC conversion in the charging process.

Which single input affects my monthly cost the most: mileage, efficiency, or electricity rate?

None of the three structurally dominates the others in this model -- Daily Miles Driven, EV Efficiency, and Electricity Rate each enter the cost formula as a direct multiplier or divisor, so nudging any single one of them by some fraction shifts Monthly Cost by roughly that same fraction. In practice, EV Efficiency is usually the hardest one to change (it's mostly fixed by your vehicle), while driving less or finding a lower off-peak electricity rate are the two levers you can actually act on.
