Charging an EV costs more than the battery's raw energy capacity suggests, because no charging system is perfectly efficient -- some energy is lost as heat in the process, and this calculator accounts for that by dividing the raw charge needed by a Charging Efficiency percentage (typically 85-95%) to get the actual energy drawn from the wall or station. The charge needed itself is simply the gap between Target Charge and Current Charge, applied to Battery Capacity: going from 20% to 80% on a 75 kWh battery needs 45 kWh of charge before the efficiency loss is applied, and if Target Charge is set at or below Current Charge, no charging is needed at all, so the calculator reports zero cost and zero energy rather than a negative figure for what would actually be a discharge, not a charge. Electricity Rate then converts that energy figure directly into a dollar cost -- a straightforward multiplication, so doubling the rate doubles the cost for the same charging session. Charging Time is reported separately for all three common charger types (Level 1, Level 2, and DC Fast) since the energy needed is identical across all three -- only the power delivery rate differs, which is why this calculator shows one cost figure alongside three very different time estimates. Cost Per Mile applies the same Charging Efficiency loss as Charging Cost: it's the electricity rate divided by both the assumed 3.5 mi/kWh efficiency and the Charging Efficiency percentage, since every mile driven requires drawing more energy from the wall than actually reaches the wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the calculator show $0 cost when Target Charge is set below Current Charge?
Charging can only add energy to the battery, not remove it, so if the target charge level is at or below where the battery already sits, there is genuinely nothing to charge. The calculator clamps the charge-needed calculation to zero in that case rather than reporting a negative cost, which would incorrectly imply the calculator is modeling discharging or selling energy back.
How does Charging Efficiency change the actual cost compared to the battery's raw energy need?
Charging Efficiency represents energy lost as heat during the charging process, so the calculator divides the raw kWh gap between Current and Target Charge by the efficiency percentage to find the actual energy pulled from the source. At 90% efficiency, filling a 45 kWh gap actually draws 50 kWh from the wall -- the extra 5 kWh is lost, but you still pay your utility for all of it.
Does raising the Target Charge by a fixed number of percentage points always add the same amount to Charging Cost?
Yes, as long as Target Charge stays above Current Charge -- each additional percentage point of Target Charge adds the same fixed amount of battery capacity's worth of energy (divided by efficiency and multiplied by rate) to the total, so Charging Cost rises in a straight line rather than by a fixed proportion of the current cost. That's an important distinction: going from 20% to 40% (20 points) costs the same as going from 60% to 80% (also 20 points), but going from 20% to 80% (60 points) costs three times as much as either -- it's the size of the percentage-point gap that scales linearly, not the target charge value itself.
Why does a larger battery capacity increase the charging cost for the same percentage charge?
The charge gap is calculated as a percentage of total Battery Capacity, so charging from 20% to 80% on a 100 kWh battery adds 60 kWh, while the identical 20%-to-80% charge on a 50 kWh battery only adds 30 kWh. A bigger battery simply holds more total energy, so the same percentage swing represents more kWh -- and therefore more cost -- regardless of how efficient the charger is.
