EV Road Trip Planner Calculator

Plan an EV road trip by calculating charging stops needed, total trip time, and driving vs charging time breakdown.

About this calculator

This calculator estimates how many DC fast-charging stops an EV road trip needs by first computing a Usable Range per leg -- 85% of the entered Vehicle Range, leaving a 15% buffer so the driver does not plan to arrive at a charger with an empty battery. It then treats each practical leg as the smaller of that usable range and the Avg Charger Spacing (since a driver cannot skip past a needed charger even if the car could technically travel farther), and divides the remaining trip distance beyond the first usable-range leg by that leg distance, rounding up to a whole number of stops. Charging Stops therefore rises whenever Trip Distance grows or Vehicle Range shrinks, and falls (or stays at the same whole-number count) as Vehicle Range grows, since a longer-range EV needs fewer stops to cover the same distance.

Total Trip Time adds Driving Time (Trip Distance divided by a fixed 60 mph average highway speed) to the total time spent charging (Charging Stops multiplied by Avg Charge Time per Stop). EV Time Overhead compares this total against a simplified gas-car benchmark that assumes one 5-minute fuel stop roughly every 300 miles, showing how much longer the EV trip takes purely due to charging versus a comparable gas-powered trip.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the Trip Distance in miles (one way).
  2. Set your Vehicle Range in miles on a full charge under real-world conditions.
  3. Enter the Average Charger Spacing in miles along your route (check PlugShare or ChargePoint).
  4. Set the Average Charge Time per Stop in minutes (20–80% typically takes 25–40 min at DC fast chargers).
  5. Review Charging Stops Needed, Total Trip Time, Total Charging Time, and EV Time Overhead vs. a gas car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the calculator use 85% of Vehicle Range instead of the full range?

Usable Range per leg is set to 85% of the entered Vehicle Range, leaving a 15% buffer. This reflects real-world EV road-trip practice: drivers plan to arrive at the next charger with meaningful range remaining rather than running the battery down to empty, both for safety margin and because charging speed slows significantly as a battery approaches full, so arriving with some charge left and topping up partially is typically faster overall.

Why does increasing Avg Charger Spacing sometimes not reduce Charging Stops?

Each leg's distance is capped at the smaller of the Usable Range and Avg Charger Spacing -- a driver cannot skip past a charger they need even if the car could technically travel farther on the remaining charge. Once Avg Charger Spacing exceeds Usable Range, the Usable Range becomes the binding limit on leg length, so further increases to Avg Charger Spacing no longer change the number of stops needed.

What average speed does the calculator assume for Driving Time?

Driving Time is calculated using a fixed average speed of 60 mph, applied to the full Trip Distance regardless of road type or traffic conditions. This is a simplification for estimating total trip duration; actual driving time will vary with highway speed limits, traffic, and route terrain.

How is the gas-car comparison in EV Time Overhead calculated?

The gas-car benchmark assumes one 5-minute refueling stop roughly every 300 miles of Trip Distance, added to the same Driving Time used for the EV. EV Time Overhead is the difference between the EV's Total Trip Time and this simplified gas-car total, showing how many extra minutes the charging stops add compared to a quick gas-station fill-up schedule.

Does a shorter Avg Charge Time per Stop reduce the number of stops needed?

No -- Avg Charge Time per Stop only affects how long each stop takes (and therefore Total Charging Time and Total Trip Time), not how many stops are needed. Charging Stops depends only on Trip Distance, Vehicle Range, and Avg Charger Spacing, since it answers a purely geographic question: how many charger locations must be visited to cover the distance.
