This calculator separates two very different questions that often get conflated when comparing an EV to a gas car: what does each one cost to fuel every year, and how long does the EV's typically higher purchase price take to pay for itself through fuel and maintenance savings. Annual fuel savings depends only on usage and energy costs -- annual miles driven, the gas car's MPG and fuel price, and the EV's efficiency (kWh per 100 miles) and electricity rate -- and is completely unaffected by either vehicle's purchase price or how many years you plan to own it, since it's simply a comparison of two annual operating costs. Break-even point is a separate calculation that does depend on purchase price: it takes the price difference between the EV and the gas car and divides by the combined annual fuel-plus-maintenance savings, so a bigger price gap between the two vehicles takes proportionally longer to recoup even if the annual savings themselves stay the same. Maintenance costs are fixed averages in this calculator ($1,200/year for the gas car, $600/year for the EV, reflecting EVs having no oil changes and fewer moving parts) rather than adjustable inputs, so actual maintenance costs for a specific vehicle and driving pattern will vary from these baseline figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't the purchase price of either vehicle affect the annual fuel savings figure?

Annual fuel savings is calculated purely from ongoing operating costs -- miles driven, gas MPG and price, and EV efficiency and electricity rate -- none of which reference either vehicle's sticker price. Purchase price only enters the calculation later, in the break-even point, which compares the price difference between the two vehicles against the annual savings this first figure represents.

Why does gas MPG matter more to the savings figure than the ownership period does?

Gas MPG directly changes how much fuel the gas car burns for the same annual mileage, so it moves the annual fuel-cost comparison every single year. Ownership period (years) only multiplies an already-fixed annual savings figure to get a lifetime total -- it doesn't change what the annual savings actually is, so on a per-year basis it has no effect on the annual fuel savings number at all, only on how many years that same annual figure gets summed over.

How much does annual fuel savings change between a fuel-efficient and a fuel-thirsty gas car?

At this calculator's defaults, moving from a 55 MPG gas car down to a 15 MPG gas car raises the EV's annual fuel savings from around $327 to more than $2,300 -- roughly a seven-fold increase -- because a lower-MPG gas car burns proportionally more fuel for the same annual mileage while the EV's electricity cost stays the same. Gas MPG is the single input this calculator's fuel-savings figure responds to most strongly.

Can the break-even point ever show as unreachable?

Yes -- if the combined annual fuel-and-maintenance savings work out to zero or negative (meaning the EV doesn't actually save money on a year-to-year basis given the entered inputs), the calculator reports the break-even point as "Never" rather than a nonsensical negative number of years, since a price premium can't be recouped by savings that don't exist.
