This calculator converts that notation into an actual overall tire diameter by first finding sidewall height (width times aspect ratio, converted from millimeters to inches) and then adding TWO sidewalls -- one above the rim, one below -- to the rim diameter, since the tire wraps around the wheel on both sides. From overall diameter, circumference and revolutions per mile follow directly (a bigger tire needs fewer revolutions to cover the same mile). The comparison side of this calculator matters most when changing tire sizes, because a vehicle's speedometer is calibrated to the ORIGINAL tire's revolutions-per-mile -- it counts wheel revolutions and reports speed assuming each revolution still covers the original distance. Why does fitting a larger-diameter tire make your actual speed higher than your speedometer shows?

A speedometer counts wheel revolutions and converts them to speed using the ORIGINAL tire's circumference. A larger tire covers MORE ground per revolution than the original, so at any given speedometer reading you're actually covering more distance than the gauge assumes -- your true speed and true odometer distance both end up higher than what's displayed.
